“Alright, so what did you observe today?” I asked him, and he looked nervous.
“You may speak freely, Elijah,” I reassured him.
“Luna Scarlett has a penthouse in the city. Today, I followed her. She mostly went shopping with some girlfriends. They’re all humans, and then they lounged around in the house for most of the day. However, they’re throwing a party tonight, and it’s open to everyone. I will be attending to see if I can find anything else,” he explained.
“You didn’t notice her hanging around with any suspicious characters?” I asked.
“No, Alpha, but this is just the first day. I’m sure something will come up,” he said.
“You’re right. Good job, Elijah. Let us know what you find out at the party. And next time, you can call us or video chat to give your report. You coming and going wastes time that you could be using to watch her,” I told him.
“I totally understand. Also, I wanted to ask, if I see an opportunity, do I have permission to bug her penthouse and her phone?” he asked me.
“Yes, you have my permission. Do whatever is necessary, as long as it doesn’t harm her,” I told him.
“Understood, Alpha. I’ll take my leave now.” He bowed his head and left the house, closing the door behind him.
“She bought a freaking penthouse with my money? How did I not notice that?” I asked Zeo.
“Well, you’ve been so busy, and so have I. I can’t even remember the last time I looked at my bank statements,” he replied.
“First thing tomorrow, I need you to call up our financial officer and my personal accountant,” I told him.
“Of course, but what are you going to do?” he asked.
“Something I should’ve done a long time ago. I’m cutting her off. While her pack is dying, she’s out there partying without a care in the world. Well, if that’s the life she wants to live, it won’t be on my dime,” I told him.
“You know this is just going to cause a fight,” he said as we walked out of the house and to my car.
“I know, but luckily for me, I won’t be here,” I said with a smirk on my face. “No, please, cut her off after you come back from your trip. If you do this now, I’m going to have to be the one to deal with her. Haven’t you enjoyed the peace and quiet of the past few days without her here?” he asked.
“Fine, you already have enough to deal with. I’ll do it when I return,” I said, and he let out an exaggerated sigh.
“But what kind of person is she? Doesn’t she have a heart? I mean, people are dying, children are dying, and she isn’t moved by it at all,” I said as I started the car.
“Well, it’s two things: either she’s just a sociopath, or she has something to do with it. My vote is a sociopath,” he said.
I knew he meant it as a joke, but his words echoed in my head as I drove down to Lena’s house.
“What if she is?” I asked him.
“What if she’s what?” he asked.
“What if she has something to do with the disease?” I asked him.
“You know I was just kidding when I said that, right?” he told me.
“I know, I know. But what if that’s why she’s been acting this way? What if the reason she doesn’t care is because she’s the one behind it?” I asked him.
“What would be her reason, though? And sorry to say, but Scarlett isn’t smart enough to pull off something like this. She’s too volatile,” he replied.
“Okay, but what if she had help? What if she’s helping the mastermind behind all this?” I asked him.
“Now that’s more plausible. But if she is helping the person behind this, with Elijah following her and bugging her phone and her apartment, we’ll find out soon enough,” he said.
“Yeah, you’re right,” I agreed as I parked my car in front of Lena’s house.
“You don’t need to worry about that now, though. Tonight, you get to have dinner and spend time with your kids. So focus on that. Scarlett can wait until tomorrow,” he told me, and I nodded, because he was right.
“Are you ready to see Zoey?” I asked, and he gave me a sheepish smile. He was nervous.
“You’ll be fine. Zoey is more bark than bite,” I said, and then we got out of the car.
I knocked on the door and waited a few moments. It swung open, and there stood Zoey; she didn’t look happy to see us.
“Zoey,” I greeted.
“Leo, Zeo. Come in,” she said, then opened the door wider.
The moment I stepped in, I heard Liam shout, “Mom, boss man is here.” That brought a smile to my face.
It took us about two hours, but we finally had dinner ready. The cake needed another twenty minutes in the oven, and then I’d pull it out.
I checked the time, and it was already six-thirty. Emmett was in the living room with the kids. Zoey had already bathed them, and they were in their PJs. Zoey was up in her room getting ready, and when she came downstairs, I’d head upstairs to get ready.
While I was setting the table, she came down looking stunning in a white floral dress. It looked like she’d even put on a bit of makeup.
“Not a word from you,” she told me.
“I didn’t say anything,” I replied, doing my best to hold back my smile.
“You should go get ready before your guests arrive. I’ll finish setting the table,” she said.
“Thank you, and you can take the cake out in about twenty minutes,” I told her.
“Okay, twenty minutes,” she said. “And Zoey… you look really pretty,” I added.
I ran up the stairs, but I didn’t miss the small smile that appeared on her face.
