“Of course you did, you’re too smart not to,” I tell her.
“But if you didn’t need my help, were you ever planning on coming to see me?” she asks.
“Of course I was. The moment we found a cure, my next stop was coming here to see you. With everyone dying around me, I realized how important family was,” I tell her, and that’s the truth. I was always planning to come back.
She looks at me for a few moments, then a huge smile spreads across her face, and she throws her arms over my shoulder, hugging me. “I missed you so much, Leo.”
“I missed you too, little one,” I tell her, and we just stay there in that moment until Lena clears her throat.
“Oh, Lena, I’m so sorry,” Freya apologizes as she lets go of me.
“It’s fine. If I had as much power as you did, I would’ve done the same thing when I saw him again, so no judgment here,” Lena tells her.
“I knew I would like you,” Freya says as she takes a seat opposite Lena, and I sit next to Lena on the couch.
“Yeah, but can one of you explain to me what just happened there? The reason you haven’t spoken for six years is because of me?” Lena asks us, and I look at Freya.
“It is because of you, but there’s more to it. I don’t know if Leo told you this, but I have the power of divination. I can see into the future. A week before Leo left New Orleans, I had a premonition. It wasn’t clear to me, but I saw the person’s face. Leo looked happy. I saw him surrounded by his kids and a woman, but her face was…”
“Obscured, but like I said, you were all happy. I told him that love would find him again, and not too long after he left, he found you, and you guys were happy. Then, two years later, I get another vision. It’s the same vision, but this time, it’s so much clearer. I can see the woman’s face, and it’s you. I called my idiot brother and told him this, but that was the biggest mistake I made. I should’ve never told him about the vision, because I’m very sure that’s the reason he got back together with Scarlett. Both of you look identical, and I told him love would come back, so he took it to mean that was Scarlett. That night, I had another vision. I saw what he did to you, and I called him to tell him he was making a huge mistake, but he didn’t want to hear it. It’s like he was under a spell or something. So, that’s basically the gist of it. That’s why we haven’t talked for six years,” Freya tells Lena.
Lena looks shocked. If there was a word bigger than shock, I would use that.
“Wow, that’s a lot. But Leo is right. How sure are you that I was the woman in the visions?” Lena asks Freya.
“Because in the vision, Leo called out your name. He called out ‘Selene,’” Freya says, and I turn around in shock and glare at her. She never told me this before.
Lena’s POV-
Well, this trip is really shaping up. First, Leo got his ass whooped by his sister, and then there’s the revelation of the vision.
“What do you mean I called her name out in the vision? You never told me this,” Leo says, looking shocked and confused.
“Because I only had that vision that night, you buffoon! Why do you think I called you? The person who’s scared of electronics picked up a phone and called because I knew if I sent a postcard, by the time it got to you, it would be too late. But you didn’t want to hear anything I had to say,” she tells him, and that shuts him up. He has such a guilty look on his face.
“He wasn’t really listening to anyone that day,” I tell her.
“You said he called me Selene in the vision, right?” I ask her.
“Yes, he did,” she replies.
“Well, I don’t want to say your vision is wrong, but maybe it’s kind of redundant now because that isn’t my name anymore. So, it’s possible that Leo’s future has changed, and he’s meant to be with Scarlett and not me,” I tell her.
“Yes, but I haven’t really gotten any visions after that one, but I guess you’re right. It’s the butterfly effect, right? One choice can change a whole lot,” Freya says as she looks at Leo, who still hasn’t said anything. But I really don’t have the time to relive the past right now.
“Okay, but that’s not the reason why we are here. You said you knew we were coming?” I ask her.
“Yes, I had another vision. Well, two visions, to be precise. The first, I saw your land getting poisoned and people getting sick,” she says.
“Wait a minute, you knew this was coming and you didn’t think to warn me?” Leo asks her.
“Do you really think I would be that petty? I got this vision a few days ago. I called the number I had, but it was disconnected, so I sent a postcard. You know how long those things take, but I had to try,” Freya explains to him.
“Oh,” Leo says.
“Yeah, oh. Anyways, I saw your land getting poisoned, but as usual, the vision wasn’t clear. I just saw a figure in a black cloak, and then the next thing I saw were images of people-especially children-getting sick and dying. Then the second vision I had was of both of you at my front door. I put two and two together and figured that you might need a witch to find a cure for this disease. Was I right?” she asked.
“Yeah, you are absolutely right. I ran a number of tests, and they either came up inconclusive or brought up elements that I don’t recognize. That’s when everything clicked that this disease has an element of magic in it,” I explained to her.
“So, you’re a doctor?” she asked me.
“Yeah, I am, but my specialty is infectious diseases,” I tell her.
“So Leo, tell me, how exactly did you convince her to help you after the way you treated her?” Freya asks her brother, and he just glares at her. They really are siblings, even if they’re not blood-related.
“Actually, he didn’t know it was me,” I tell her.
“But you knew he was the one, so why did you agree to help?”
“I didn’t at first, but then he kept sending the letters, and with what he was offering as payment, I knew that he was desperate. At the end of the day, I’m a doctor, and the one thing we live by is ‘first, do no harm.’ If there was a chance I could help, I had to do it. Plus, that was my pack once upon a time, and the disease seemed dangerous, and things like that intrigue me,” I tell her, and she smiles.
“I like her, Leo. I really like her. So, what exactly did you offer her, Leo?” she asks her brother.
“Money and half of the pack’s land,” Leo tells her.
“Fuck, then it must be really bad. How many are sick, and how many have died so far?” she asks.
“We’ve had twenty deaths so far, most of them are children, and more than half of the pack has been infected,” Leo tells her.
“This disease… it’s erratic. I don’t understand it. It seems to affect the kids more. I don’t know if it’s because of their immune systems or if it’s something else. And also, the way it spreads. Why isn’t everyone sick? Why are there just some people? Have you seen or heard anything like this before?” I ask her.
“Well, I have heard of something similar, but it was years ago. Now, everyone thinks it was just a normal run-of-the-mill disease, but it wasn’t-or I guess ‘isn’t’ is the correct word, because it still exists,” she says.
“What disease was that?” I ask her, genuinely curious.
“The plague, also known as the Black Death,” she says, and I am completely stunned.
“The plague was the work of witches?” I ask her. I can’t believe it.
