“Don’t laugh at that stink bug.” She says in a disgusted tone.
“Why stink bug?” I ask her.
“Well because they are annoying as hell and they stink. Like him.” She says matter of factly. I only rolled my eyes at her and continue to eat.
Once we are done eating we start to walk over to the school. I stop right before we get to the sidewalk that walks up to the school.
“You should probably stay here while I get the kids.” I say looking over to him. His beautiful brown eyes show confusion.
“Why?” He asks.
“Well because you will probably scare the children and the parents. You don’t come here, so they will probably think something is wrong.” I say and his eyes go to understanding. I can see the green flecks in them now. Before I could get lost in his eyes I hear the bell ring and children start to flood out. I hurry and turn around and walk towards the entrance of the school, looking for Christopher and Breana.
I wait for a few minutes and see Christopher walking out of school slowly. He looks around and I see confusion on his face. When he spots me he lights up and runs up to me yelling.
“Luna! Luna! You actually came!” He grabs my leg for a hug and smiles up at me. Fen pushes forward to see him and she smiles.
“I did.” I say back to him then look around to see Breana is still not out. There are only a handful of kids walking out of school. After another minute I look down at Christopher.
“Did you see your sister?” I ask him. He looks up to me and shakes his head. I waited a couple more minutes and still no sign of her. I look over to see Alarick is walking up to us. Now that there is only us here he must think it is alright. He smiles at Christopher.
“You must be Christopher.” He says as he squats down to Christopher’s height. Christopher nods his head then looks up to me. He moves closer to me and wraps his arms around my leg, trying to hide form Alarick.
“Christopher. This is Alpha Alarick.” I say as I run my hand through his blond hair. His eyes go wide and he looks at the ginormous man standing to his feet.
“Alpha?” He says in a whisper. Alarick nods his head smiling to Christopher.
“Christopher, why don’t you show Alpha some of those cool things you were telling me about yesterday on the playground.” I kneel down and ask him. He brightens up and takes Alarick’s hand to lead him to the playground.
“I’ll hang on to your book bag while you show him.” I say taking the bookbag from him. Alarick looks at me questioningly. All I do is nod and mouth “thank you”. I walk towards the school allowing Fen to come out. She sniffs the bookbag and starts to follow the scent that is similar to Christopher’s. She lets me have back control as we reach one of the girls’ bathrooms. I walk in and see Breana curled up in a ball against the corner, crying. I go over to her and sit down next to her. I put my hand on her shoulder to get her attention and to give her some calming energy. She turns to me and crawls in my lap hugging my neck. I let her stay like this until she pulls away.
She sniffles and she looks up at me. I smiled sadly down at her.
“I’m sorry for making you wait, Luna. I couldn’t let Chris see me sad.” She says as a new wave of tears threatens to fall.
“There is no need to apologize darling.” I say to her as I remove a tear that escaped her eye. I take her head and press her against my chest as she starts to cry harder.
“I miss my parents. Why couldn’t I have gone with them?” She asks and my heart breaks for her. After a few more minutes she stops crying and looks up at me.
“You are stong Breana. I can tell. It will be hard, but eventually the pain will hurt less and less.” I say.
“You wouldn’t understand.” She says getting up from my lap and turning to face the other direction.
“I lost my mother many years ago Breana.” I tell her then she turns around to look at me.
“But you still had your father didn’t you.” She asks.
“I did. But when my mother died, my father was distant. He wasn’t himself anymore and it was like I lost him too.” I tell her honestly.
“Some of the kids make fun of me for not having my parents.” She says, shocking me and earning a silent growl from Fen. Kids are cruel.
“That is not right Breana.” I say trying to control the anger that is building.
“No it isn’t, but nothing will help. The teachers don’t stop them.” She says with more tears. I take her in for a hug to comfort her.
“I will come in tomorrow and talk with them.” I say trying to make her feel better, but she only panics.
“No! It will only get worse. Please don’t.” She begs as she pulls away from me.
“I won’t talk to your class specifically. I will talk to all classes about bullying and how it is not okay.” I say to try and ease her worries.
“Only if you don’t say anything about me.” She says. I nod my head.
