“No. I did.” I say, taking another bite.
“What is it?” He asks, still eyeing the sandwich.
“A turkey sandwich.” I answer.
“I got that, but there is something different. Something extra.” He says taking another bite and trying to figure it out.
“A secret sauce I made.” I say smiling at him. He won’t be able to figure it out. It is basically mayonnaise with herbs and spices to give the sandwich extra flavor.
“Secret sauce?” He says taking another bite. “It’s a mayonnaise base, with garlic and onion. Chili powder and…” He pauses trying to name the rest of it. I am surprised he could guess what he did. I look at him expectantly. He takes another bite. “cajun . There is something else I am not sure about. What is it?” He asks, surprising me even more.
“Secret ingredient.” I say winking at him, then finishing my sandwich. He finished his and then sat there. I can feel his nervousness.
“Gamma? Is there a reason you sought me out?” I ask him, trying to encourage him to talk.
“Garret. You can call me Garret. But yes there is a reason.” He says, not going any further.
“And that reason is?” I ask. Fen starts pacing in my head again.
“I know.” Is all he says. He looks at me and I hold a confused expression.
“You know what?” I ask. He clears his throat and continues.
“I know who you are. What you are hiding.” He says and my heart stops. He knows.
“What are you talking about exactly?” I ask, trying to clear things up. There are many things he could think he knows about me. I see him look around before leaning closer to me.
“You’re him. The shadow.” He says in a whisper. My eyes go wide and Fen starts to growl. She tries to push her way out, but I hold her back. She is panicking and wants to kill him. I know our eyes are going back and forth while we fight for control for my body. He leans back and watches me with a small smile. After winning the fight with Fen I looked over to him. I know my expression is all over the place.
“ow?” Is all I ask. My voice is strained while I try to digest this information.
“When we were in Alarick’s office I saw your eyes flicker. I made the connection there. I only confirmed it just now.” He says, looking at me. I get up and quickly grab my things. I have to leave. He knows and it is a matter of time before he tells Alarick. I have to leave before that happens. I go to walk out of the gazebo when he grabs my arm. Not hard, but in a way that tell me to stop. I rip my arm from him and he looks at me.
“I’m not going to tell anybody.” He says shocking me. I look at him and I can feel that what he says is the truth, but I don’t trust myself so I wait for Fen to confirm it. This could be his way of distracting us until the guards get here. “He is genuine. I don’t feel anything but curiosity and admiration from him and his wolf.” Fen says. That calms me but I still don’t know what to do. I go back to the bench and sit down, putting my head in my hands. He sits down next to me and puts a hand on my shoulder. I look up into his gorgeous dark brown eyes.
“Why?” I ask him. He takes his hand off of my shoulder and sighs.
“Although I do not agree with the way you do certain things. I think that what you do is good. You save people.” He says. I get a feeling that he knows more than he is letting on.
“At first when you came out four years ago, I was terrified. I looked everywhere and couldn’t find you. You leave no trace at any of your scenes and that is scary. It wasn’t until 3 years ago, when my sister was attacked by men in the pack that I knew you were good. You saved her when I couldn’t and killed the bastards who hurt her.” He says. I try to think about it, but have no recollection. I have seen many people. “Since that day I have vowed that I would help you, unknowingly.”
“What do you mean?” I ask him and I feel guilt rolling off of him.
“I have hidden about ? of the attacks from Alarick. Most of the time the packs call and they report with me or Markus. If they talk with Markus or Alarick I investigate because of my gift, but I never find anything. If Alarick knew about some of the attacks you have done, then he would not stop until you were found and killed. You are a good person, who does some bad stuff to bad people. I wouldn’t say that is too bad.” He says surprising me and Fen. I nod my head, but still can’t wrap my head around what he is telling me.
“Why are you telling me this?” I ask him, not really knowing his reasoning. He could have just let it be.
“My sister. The one that you saved. She ran away and became a rogue with her daughter two years ago. After the men you saved her from attacked her she wasn’t herself. Her mate started cheating on her and she couldn’t handle it, so she killed him and ran away. I am wondering, hoping, maybe that you ran into her out there.” He says and I feel his hope.
“I’m sorry, but I run into a lot of people out there. You would be surprised how many females with babies are rogues.” I said to him, his face saddens and I can feel his disappointment.
“I understand. But if you ever do run into her, her name is Kyndra and her daughter’s name is Kyndal.” He says smiling at the memory of them. I nod my head and smile towards him.
“If I run into them I will let you know.” I say trying to comfort him.
“Thank you.” He says as he gets up and leaves. I sit there longer and enjoy the nice day.
“I think tonight is the night for Lucas. We need to make sure he is ready if anything happens to us.” Fen says.
“You think he is ready?” I ask her.
“We have been working with him for two months and he has excelled greatly. We actually spar with him, not taking it easy. He is ready.” She says.
