I wouldn’t allow myself to become his captive breeder!
I pulled out a sheet of letter paper and began drafting a letter to my mother,
“Mom,
I’ve been thinking about what you said. Tradition alone is not a good enough reason for me to marry the Nightwolf Alpha. I want to find a mate who wants me for me. I don’t know if I can find that here anymore. You of all people know how important it is to mate with someone who wants you for you.
I don’t know where we can go, but I want to find a way for both of us to leave and start new somewhere else. Don’t tell anyone, but send me a note if you are willing to take that chance.
Your daughter,
Avery”
I sealed the enveloped and walked slowly into town to mail it. Once it slipped into the mailbox I felt a wave of peace come over me. No matter what happened from here on out, my mother and I would create a plan to get away. Gideon wouldn’t be able to stop me.
These Silvermoon women were done being used!
Zara’s POV
I folded the letter with satisfaction and put it back in my pocket.
So, not all was well in Avery’s little paradise.
Good.
If I had my way, she would never find peace. She had somehow, despite my best efforts, stolen Ryan’s heart, and for that, I would never forgive her.
I couldn’t understand where I had gone wrong. In every way, I was better than Avery. I was younger, prettier, faster, and my wolf was strong, whereas hers was essentially nonexistent. I bore Ryan’s mating mark, and I had claimed him on the Full Mating Moon.
By all accounts, he should be wrapped around my finger.
And yet his conversation off the back porch echoed in my nightmares. Ryan and the Rogue King teaming up to get back the useless girl who was rumored to be the Moon Goddess Heir.
I snorted. Like such a thing really existed.
I had to admit, knowing that Ryan was this gullible made me respect him less. Ever since we had mated, I had started to realize just how little he actually did for the pack.
But that didn’t matter, he had me now.
I would whip him into shape as the Alpha I knew he could be.
While I hated that Avery was the focus of their schemes, I admitted that a part of me delighted in the idea of going on the offensive against Nightwolf. It would show their prick of an Alpha right for treating us like dirt.
But before they enacted that plan, I had a scheme of my own.
Because Zara Silvermoon always ended up on the winning team.
I finished putting on my makeup and looked at myself in the mirror. Slinky, draped fabric skimmed over my breasts and tightened around my hips to show off my curves. My hair was loose and curled, and delicate heeled sandals graced my feet.
I flipped up the visor mirror, opened the car door, and stepped out into Nightwolf territory.
The Nightwolf Alpha had his offices on the second floor of their pack house, I knew. My heels clacked a tiled foyer and up the wooden staircase. No one spotted me.
The door to the Alpha’s office was open. Warm light spilled out onto the flagstone hallway.
“Enter” the Alpha snapped as I stepped into his doorway. If he was surprised to see me, he hid it well.
“Alpha.” I purred, giving a sweet curtsy.
“You.” He huffed out through his nose, “What do you want?”
“I have a proposal for you.” I gave my best winning smile and stepped closer to his desk. The chair in front of him held his coat and bag, and I moved them out of my way to sit.
“I’m still dealing with the consequences of your last proposal.” Alpha Gideon’s face was shadowed by the shade of his desk lamp, but I could see the gleam of his eyes in the darkness.
“Trust me, I am too.” I said with a labored sigh. “But I am here to offer a way for both of us to resolve our issues.”
Gideon gestured with an open sweep of his hand, encouraging me to go on.
“You must know that Alpha Ryan wants your Luna,” I said matter-of-factly.
“Does he now…” Gideon said blandly.
“I came to warn you that he intends to try and steal Avery away from you.” I leaned forward, watching for his reaction. If he was surprised, he didn’t show it.
“And you’re here to beg me not to let her go, in hopes that your faithless husband and alpha will remember his vows and return to your bed?” Gideon asked.
My eyes flashed at his presumption. “First off, Ryan has never left my bed. Secondly, on the contrary. I want you to let him.”
Gideon’s body stilled. “You want me to let your Alpha steal my Luna? Why would I do that?”
“Because I know what you want.” Now was my chance to press my case. I rose from the chair and crossed around the desk to stare down at Gideon who swiveled in his chair to watch me. I made sure to let my hips sway as I approached.
I placed my hands on the arms of his chair and leaned down to look in his face, which, coincidentally, gave him a great look down my dress.
“I know that Avery doesn’t want to stay here with you.” His eyes flickered, but he didn’t deny it. “And I know that you need a Silvermoon bride to keep tradition. Let her go, and I will stay as your Luna. You gain a willing bride, and Avery is out of your hair.”
Silence stretched as my proposal sank in. I watched a muscle in his cheek jump.
“And you…” Gideon said finally, “Will fulfill my every need?”
“Of course.” I purred, pleased that he was considering. “You would be my Alpha. There would be nothing I could deny you.”
“I have a few demands.” Gideon’s fingers flickered as the fabric of my dress brushed against his knuckles. Absentmindedly, he touched the fringe of the fabric, rubbing it between the pads of his fingertips as he talked.
“Anything.” I breathed. I had to admit, being this close to a true Alpha in his prime made my body respond in ways I wasn’t prepared for. Being with Ryan was nothing compared to the potency that flowed off of Gideon. His tall, muscled body was built for violence and pleasure.
“My bride must be of the Silvermoon bloodline.”
