“Potion. Spell. Witch. Wizard. Experiment. Object.” He lists out then looks me over.
“You are hiding the mate bond with your necklace.” He says. Fen growls slightly in my head, but then swells with pride. He actually was able to read us. We do a better job at masking our emotions than most. Most will give body language away showing you got the answer right. We don’t do that. We might be able to hide our body language, but actual emotions are uncontrollable no matter how hard one may try.
“Yes. Good job Lucas.” I say and I let Fen peak through our eyes to show him she is proud too. He smiles wide, but then it falls.
“I don’t understand though. How come I felt your emotions falter with the other packs and ranks?” He asks.
“What do your instincts tell you?” I ask. I am not giving the information out, he will have to work for it.
“That there is a lot more to the story other than King Alarick is your second chance mate.” I nod my head and he huffs then starts asking questions. After four hours he is only more confused.
“I don’t understand. I know that King Alarick is your second chance mate.” He says with doubt in his voice.
“Is he?” I ask and I feel his frustration spark.
“Yes I confirmed that four hours ago!” He yells with frustration.
“I don’t know what to tell you Lucas. We are doing this because you are training. If you can figure me out, you can figure anybody out.” I remind him and he sighs.
“I know.” He says and looks out towards the water.
“lets go for a run to get you out of your head.” I suggest and he nods while slowing getting up. After our run we decided to call it a night and pick it up again tomorrow.
The next three days are the same. Alarick canceled our daily meeting so that I can focus on training. He is really worried and getting more snappy with people. Or so I am told, I haven’t seen him at all, not even at dinner. It is now Wednesday night and I am off to train with Lucas. He is close to figuring out my mate situation, but he can’t seem to put it together. I go up to the training grounds and wait for him, once he comes we walk over to the lake. We stake a seat and he gets started.
“The Alpha of Blue Lightning. A random rogue. The Beta of Red Rose. a pack member of Warrior Tree. The Delta of Horizon. The Gamma of Whispering Wind. The Alpha of Phoenix.” He says, then nods his head to keep himself on track.
“Hunters. Moon goddess. Second chance. Third chance. Death.” He says. He must be catching on.
“I think I got it.” He says then his eyes hold a slight sadness when he looks up at me.
“Then go ahead.” I say.
“It is going to sound ridiculous and impossible. Which is why I never would have guessed it before, but it is the only explanation.” He rants a little.
“Everything about me is impossible. Go ahead Lucas.” I say encouraging him.
“Your first mate rejected you when you were 17. Which is early to find your mate, but it happened. When you turned 18, you found your second chance. He was a rogue and betrayed you, trading you for his freedom with the hunters. You killed him. After your time with the hunters whatever they did to you made it so that every time you die, you get another two chances. They all have rejected you or already chose their mate. King Alarick is your eighth mate bond or fourth second chance. You are scared that if he finds out and rejects you, you won’t be able to handle it and lose control. Like you did when your forth chance mate rejected you. Your wolf took over and that’s when you became the shadow. Killing as many rogues as you could to numb the pain of the rejection.” He says and when I don’t answer him his eyes show full sadness for me. I look up to the moon and stare at it. Sometimes I don’t understand why the moon goddess has done this to me. I thought that I had enough torture for 1000 lifetimes during my 3 years with the hunters.
“You did good Lucas.” I say to him, while still looking up towards the moon.
“Are you ready for the Luna challenge Friday?” He asked me, changing the topic. I can tell he is nervous.
“Honestly, no. I don’t want to do it. But I must.” I say back.
“You have a feeling something is going to happen, don’t you?” He asked me. I look at him, finally.
“You’re getting too good at digging into feelings.” I say, trying to joke, but he only looks at me. I sigh.
“Yes. I don’t know what it is, but no matter what, do as I say. Okay?” I tell him and he nods his head getting teary eyed. He knows the underlying meaning of what I am saying. If he must kill me he has to be able to do it. I decided to change the subject.
“Are you coming to my sister’s party tomorrow? Well today.” I ask.
“I wasn’t invited.” He says looking down.
“Yes you were. I saw the invite list. Alena is making sure all unmated males are there so Maleena has a higher chance to find her mate. She planned a big party, even though Maleena said to only keep it intimate. Alena didn’t listen. Especially since people will be arriving today for the challenge tomorrow.” I say chuckling then rolling my eyes.
“I don’t like parties.” He says and I look at him. He is sad. I feel his guilt and pain. I don’t say anything, waiting for him to tell me. “The night of the rogue attack, I was at a house party. That’s why I made it and my family didn’t. The house I was at had a bunker. Our house didn’t. The last time I was at a party was the night I lost my whole family.” He says, looking up towards the sky. I feel his guilt and sadness intensify.
“Lucas. I’m not going to pressure you to come, but I think you should. Even just for free food.” I say trying to cheer him up. He just smiles slightly then sighs.
“We will see.” He says as he gets up, I do too.
