And he was right. Again.

I turned slightly, just enough to catch a glimpse of her face in the dark. Her lips were parted, her brow smooth, breath slow and steady.

She looked peaceful now.

Because we were here.

Because we were keeping her safe.

‘Do you still trust me?’

‘With my life.’

‘With hers?’

I hesitated. That one always cost more.

‘…Yes.’

‘Then don’t shut me out. Tell me the plan.’

I stayed still, thoughts crawling like insects under my skin.

‘Full surveillance on Ivanov.’

‘Done.’

‘Bret’s flagged.’

‘Obviously.’

‘And I want her phone mic looped. Passive. No triggers. No alerts. Just… listening.’

The response didn’t come right away.

Then, slower:

‘…Dalton.’

‘She’s not the enemy. But she’s impulsive. If she walks into danger without realizing it, I want to know first.’

‘This isn’t protection. It’s paranoia.’

‘It’s prevention.’

A sigh followed-quiet, barely there, but I felt it through the mattress like static in the dark.

‘If this starts twisting you… twisting us-promise you’ll pull back.’

I stared up at the ceiling. The shadows above us shifted, breathing with the silence.

‘I can’t promise that.’

No answer.

Because he knew me.

He knew what I would become for her.

What I already was.

Because one day, she’d understand.

One day, she’d thank me.

One day, she’d look back and realize I was the only one who never lied to her about how far I’d

How far I’d fall.

How far I’d drag everyone else just to keep her safe.

My eyes burned. The moonlight touched the edges of the monitor screen on the desk across the room. Its glow pulsed like a heartbeat.

Steady.

Relentless.

Until it wasn’t.

Until it turned cold.

Until the hum of the world dulled and blurred and slipped-

I was in the library.

Not watching from the monitor.

Inside it.

The light was golden, hazy. Unreal. Like a memory someone tampered with.

Kai sat at the far table, books spread everywhere. Same posture. Same messy hair. Same fucking pen between her lips.

Alexej Ivanov leaned in-too close, that smug smirk crawling across his mouth like a scar.

He whispered something to her.

She laughed.

She laughed.

She touched his hand.

He didn’t move.

She didn’t pull away.

I tried to shout. To move.

But my legs were locked.

My voice, gone.

Then the lights flickered.

And the shadows twisted.

A figure stepped from between the tall shelves. Slow. Deliberate.

Bart Hollow.

Grinning.

Knife in hand.

No one saw him.

Except me.

I screamed.

Nothing came out.

Kai looked up, confused. Her eyes met mine across the room. She saw me.

But didn’t understand.

Alexej stood too late.

Bart moved faster.

One slash.

Blood.

Another.

Kai’s scream gurgled in her throat as she collapsed forward on the table.

Her fingers reached for her book.

Her mouth opened to say my name.

And I-

I couldn’t move.
