“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean too!?” She said as her heart raced “Did I hurt you, I’m sorry”
“Of course not, what’s wrong, how did you use my power?”
Madelyn was trembling and I didn’t understand why she was afraid
“Sweetheart, please answer me”
“I.. I can take peoples powers” She told me “But I didn’t mean to, I’m sorry, I usually have to focus to take someones powers and I don’t know how to give it back”
I frowned and touched another bud but it bloomed just fine like always “You didn’t take anything”
“But..” She looked at her hand in confusion “I don’t understand, when I obsorb someones powers they can’t use the gift anymore”
“I guess that power doesn’t work that way with your mate” I suggested
“And it didn’t hurt you?”
“I didn’t feel anything”
I looked at the flower and then back at Madelyn who was still looking terrified, she could take someones powers… just like those people in the woods who’d killed the Alpha Hallus, was Madelyn there, Hallus’s murderer had yelled at the girl who’d refused to hurt him and from what Madelyn had told us, he always hurt her for refusing his orders… she was there.. she had to be..
“Madelyn have you ever taken someones powers against their will?”
She froze for a second and I got my answer “Yes” She told me and I was at least happy she hadn’t lied to me
“Did Troy order you to do this or did you do it of your own will?”
“He ordered me” She said in a low voice and tears filled her eyes “I didn’t want to but…”
“But he’d hurt you” I finished her train of thought, she nodded and tears fell down her face “What happened after you took the powers?”
“He’d.. he’d kill them”
KODA’S POV
“You killed Maddie’s mother?”
“I thought I had” My dad admitted and I could see the agony and regret in his eyes “I stabbed her during the end of the war and we buried her but then years later, I started to hear rumours that she’d been spotted so I exhumed her coffin to find it emtpy, we searched but I never heard anything else until I met Madelyn”
“So she survived you and got killed by someone when Maddie was a baby?” I said thoughtfully “Do you know who actually killed her”
“If she actually did die, then no I don’t”
“But it was most likely someone who knew her from the war” My mother touched my fathers arm
“Wait..” I remembered something “21 years ago, uncle Fenrir tried to escape, was he trying to get free to protect her?”
“He said so” My father nodded “But I didn’t believe him, I didn’t even know how he knew she was in danger but then a few days after the failed escape, he said she was dead but I didn’t believe him again, if I’d known she’d had a baby.. I would have…”
“We would have tracked her down”
“Was uncle Fenrir her mate?”
My parents exchanged a look
“Answer me!”
“Watch it boy” My father snapped again “No, they weren’t mates, they loved each other like siblings and were really close, Iyo turned him but then…”
He looked at my mother who smiled sadly at him
“But then she got her heart broken by her chosen mate and it changed her” My mother went on with the story “She turned cold and didn’t want to be here anymore, she ran off with Fenrir and after a few years your father and grandparents heard that they were creating more werewolves and wanted to create a new master race”
“I went to them and ordered them to stop” My father continued “But she attacked me, she hated me for not being on her side after her chosen mate hurt her and when I defended myself, she went ballistic and it was the start of the war”
“Who was her chosen mate?”
“Ryker” My father answered, my eyes widened in shock, my ex’s father had broken my mates mothers heart, sh*t “They were getting married and the day of the wedding, he met his mate and couldn’t go through with the wedding”
“This is alot to take” I admited “But it explains why some of the council seem to have an issue with your sister”
“Alot of them were around during the war and hated Iyarna alot” My mother commented “It will be hard for them to accept Maddie, it’s probably why some of them were on Troy’s side and wanted her to go back to his pack with Scott”
“You had no right to hide this from us’
“Don’t tell me what rights I have boy” My father growled but my mother touched his arm again
“Darling, this is a difficult situation” My mother interjected and looked at me sadly “Meeting Madelyn has brought up some very difficult memories and old wounds for all of us and we’ll speak to her eventually but right now, we need you and Jax to keep this to yourselves, Madelyn isn’t ready for this, she’s already dealing with her own trauma”
“You expect me to lie to my mate?”
“Not forever, just for a few weeks”
“No” I said angrily and I knew that they could see in my eyes that I was serious “Maddie has been used and abused her entire life and she’s never had anyone to lean or count on and Jax and I will NOT be more people who let her down, she will know that she can trust us, no matter what, I will be telling her everything you’ve said today but I would prefer it if you’d talk to her with us, you have more information then we do”
“I will speak to her when I’m ready and not before” My father snapped “But seeing as theres no reasoning with you than so be it, Kara, we’re leaving”
“Before you go, I want to know why you all hid Iyarna’s bedroom in the old packhouse?” I asked “You don’t hide uncle Fenrir’s”
My parents looked at me in shock “How do you know about her room?”
“Maddie found it” I admitted “Along with her mothers journals, she’s been reading about her mothers life”
“What journals?” My father growled angrily
“How did she find the room?” My mother added and looked at my dad
“I don’t know” I shrugged “She just did, what does it matter?”
“I want those journals” My father said firmly “If there’s information in there about how Iyo created the werewolves, then it needs to be destroyed”
“I’m not taking away one of the few items she has of her mother”
“She had no right to take them in first place!” My father yelled and came over to me, he was my height and we glared into each others eyes
“They belonged to her mother, that makes them hers” I argued “Everything in that room belongs to Maddie”
“Enough both of you” My mother cut in and pulled my father away from him “Let’s just all cool down, Cody, please speak to Maddie about the journals and ask for the pages on the werewolves, we cannot let that information get out”
