Someone walks into my office. I look up to see who it is, and immediately my expression changes from sadness and hopelessness to anger. She’s the last person I want to see-my wife and Luna, Scarlett.
“What do you want?” I shout, anger thick in my voice.
For a moment, she is startled.
“Did you come here to see how miserable I am?”
I furrow my brow, glaring at her with obvious anger. Lately, I’ve been getting angrier every time I see her. I regret the day I rejected Selene and chose…
Her. I thought she was the one for me, but hell, I was so wrong. After Selene left for good, Scarlett started showing sides of herself I never knew existed. She was nothing compared to Selene. Selene was hardworking and always tried her best to be a good Luna and mother to the pack, even though I never gave her the chance to make the pack know she was the Luna.
After Selene left, Scarlett changed. All she does is drink, smoke, party, and never cares about the welfare of the pack.
“If you don’t have anything good to say, please leave my office now,” I said in a commanding tone, and she dared not disobey. No one can resist the command of an Alpha; it’s one of the powers only an Alpha possesses.
As she made to leave, Beta Zeo walked in with a letter in his hand. I looked at him with a smile on my face.
“Is it from Doctor Lena?” I asked.
“Yes, it is, Alpha.”
I tore open the letter, and in a matter of seconds, my whole mood changed.
I ran my hand through my hair, trying to think straight about what to do next. Doctor Lena rejected the request I sent through Beta Zeo. He became equally as frustrated as I was.
In the letter, she stated she had other prior engagements. And what other engagements could be more important than helping a dying pack?
“Beta Zeo, I need you to find out exactly what Doctor Lena has on her schedule that is so important. Also, I want you to help me deliver another letter to her, and this time, I’ll be writing it myself,” I told him, and he looked apprehensive.
“And what exactly will the contents of this letter be saying, Leo?” Zeo asked. Apart from being my Beta, he’s also my best friend, and he has always been able to read me and anticipate my moves.
“I’m going to offer her half of the pack’s wealth and lands. There’s no way she’ll be able to say no,” I told him.
“Are you flipping mad, Leo? You can’t do that. The council won’t even let you,” he said, trying to be the voice of reason. But this situation has pushed me past rational thinking.
“Half of the council has already been wiped out by this disease, and the other half will do as I say if they don’t want to be next. Whether they like it or not, I am the Alpha, and my word on this is final,” I told him.
“Whatever you say, Leo. You know I always have your back,” Zeo told me, and I appreciated that more than he knew.
“Okay, just help me find out that information. I’ll get the letter to you before the end of the day, and then you can mail it to the doctor,” I told Zeo. He bowed his head and left my office.
I took a seat and brought out my customized stationery paper. Maybe when she sees my offer, plus the fact that I-the Alpha of the pack-am writing the letter, she’ll understand the gravity of the situation.
As I wrote the letter, I poured out my feelings. I know an Alpha isn’t supposed to show weakness, but for some reason, I feel like this doctor will relate better.
As I wrote, images of sick people in my pack flashed through my mind. Men, women, children, and even babies have been afflicted with this disease. More continue to die, and they are all looking to me, as the Alpha, to help.
And by the goddess, I will do everything in my power to protect my pack.
-Lena’s POV-
“He must be really desperate to offer me that much land and wealth,” I told Zoey as I gulped down the remaining whiskey in my glass. The burn didn’t help or clear my mind.
“Yes, he must be. I’ve never heard of an Alpha offering this much to a stranger because he doesn’t know it’s you. So he must be really desperate,” Zoey said.
“Fuck! Why couldn’t he just stay out of my life? I was doing so well-I had my job, my kids-and after all these years, Leo just had to come back,” I said, running my hands through my hair.
“You can say no, Lena. You’re not obligated to help him or that pack. They all turned their backs on you,” Zoey told me.
I appreciated Zoey. I wished I were more like her-she saw the world in black and white, and that was it. But that wasn’t me. I knew there were gray areas, and I was a doctor. I swore to do no harm. So if I ignored Leo’s request and didn’t help the pack, and more people died when I could have helped, I wouldn’t be able to live with myself.
“I can see the wheels turning in your head. You’re going to do it, aren’t you?” Zoey asked.
“I have to help them, Zoey,” I told her.
“You don’t even know if you can. Everyone has tried and failed,” she said.
“You and I both know I’m not like everyone else. Plus, this helps the kids too,” I told her.
“How exactly does it help the kids?” she asked, and I could tell she was angry. I didn’t think it was possible, but Zoey hated Leo and that pack more than I did.
“Leo is their father, and if we were still together, they would all inherit that land and the wealth that comes with it. With Leo offering it to me, I can give my children what truly belongs to them,” I explained, hoping she understood.
“Money isn’t an issue, Lena. You make way too much money, and I’m their godmother. The kids will never want for anything,” Zoey said.
“It’s not about the money, Zoey. Deep down, underneath your anger, you know it’s about my children getting what’s rightfully theirs and having a connection to their legacy. They’re already asking questions about their father, and I know it will only get worse as they grow older. So even if they can’t know their father, at least they’ll have something connected to him,” I explained.
“Okay, let’s say you go. How are you going to explain the kids to Leo? There’s no way you’ll be able to hide them from him. If it were only one kid, maybe you could, but they’re three. Anna looks like you, but Liam and Luke are carbon copies of their father. How are you going to explain that to him?” Zoey asked.
“Are you forgetting that he was the one who rejected me even after I told him I was pregnant? You were there. He said he wanted nothing to do with the baby and even accused me of being unfaithful. So I highly doubt he’ll have any interest in the kids. Even if he asks questions, I’ll just tell him the kids aren’t his,” I told Zoey.
She let out a huge sigh. “I don’t like it, not one bit. But you’re my best friend, and I love you and the kids. If this is what you really want to do, then I support you. But I’m coming with you, and there will be no argument on that,” Zoey said.
“I wouldn’t expect anything less from you. I guess we’re all going back to the Moon Shadow Pack. Words I never thought I’d say,” I said, shaking my head.
“Yeah, I never expected to hear those words either. So what’s the plan, Lena?” Zoey asked.
“Well, I have to give my three weeks’ notice at the hospital and talk to my patients about moving them to another doctor, since I don’t know how long I’ll be over there. But first, I’m going to have to respond to Leo and tell him I’m accepting his offer,” I told her.
