“Where is she?” He asks, looking into my eyes.
I looked him in the eye and made sure not to show any emotion. “She is dead.”
“I see. I am sorry for your loss.” He says and glances back at my family.
“They don’t seem to be happy.” He comments.
I glance over towards them and see my sister, Alpha and Laura, with a worried expression and my father and brother with no facial expression. I feel the worriedness and anger they all are holding.
“Hmm. They don’t, do they?” I ask and look back at the King with a small smirk.
“Any family and pack would be ecstatic to be so close with the future queen and they are not. That is quite suspicious, do you not think?” He asks in a suspicious tone.
“No, not at all. I am quite close with my pack, they do not wish for me to leave. If you take another look you will see that they are all worried. Not unhappy.” I say.
He glances back at them.
“I can see that, but why? You are going to be living a far better life at the castle.” He says.
It takes everything in my power to hold Fen back from attacking. One of us has to be reasonable. After a second of struggling I answer.
“Would it ever occur to you that not everyone would wish to live here. You are taking me away from my family, my pack. They know my wishes and being queen is NOT one of them. Yet here I am.” I say through grited teeth. The audacity of the man.
“You do not wish to be queen? Every woman here wishes to be queen.” He says, and studies my reaction.
I scoff at that statement. “Not EVERY woman here. You are not the center of half of these wolves’ attention. They are not worried about who will be queen, they are worried about what is happening at home. It is not like you are the talk of every pack. You are not even a spec that the normal wolf is worried about. Life will continue and some of us enjoy that life. Yes most women here are disappointed and jealous, but the others are relieved and glad it was not them.” He says.
I can feel his anger and scrutiny and he looks around the room.
“And how would you know what all these people feel? It is not like you know them all personally.” He says.
“And nor do you, but my gift is empathy. I can feel what they are feeling.” I say confidently.
He just looked back at me and stared. Comprehension of what I have said showing in his eyes. Then the music stopped and I stepped back and curtsied as he bowed. We went back up to the stage and everyone started dancing. I had many people come to congratulate me and wish me good fortune. Most with fake smiles. Fen was about to snap.
“If you do not get me out of here this instant I will turn and kill all of these people.” Fen snarls.
“No you won’t Fen. You may want people to fear you so they will not come close. But you will never hurt an innocent.” I retort.
“GET ME OUT OF HERE NOW!” She screams at me. Making my wince.
“I am starting to get a headache. I am going outside for some fresh air.” I said to the King and got up before he could refute.
I walked speedily through the doors leading outside and found that it led to a path into a garden.
“I can’t take being around these people LeeAca. We cannot stay here.” Fen pants.
“I understand that Fen, but I can’t just say no. He has already spoken.” I say.
“Then take the necklace off so he can realize we are his mate. He won’t want us then.” She argues.
“YOU said it yourself Fen. We cannot survive another rejection from someone this powerful.”
“I know. But anything is better than nothing. What if we start to gain feelings for him? Huh?” She says to me.
“Like you would let me do that. You hate when I am nice to others. You can’t stand people Fen. You would never allow either of us to grow feelings.” I argue.
We stop arguing when we hear crushing of the gravel beneath our feet. “Are you alright?”
I turn and see my brother, Sebastian. I just stare at him and nod, not knowing what else to do. He walks up to me and pulls me in.
“You’re a mess Ace. I can feel it radiating off of you.” He says in a hushed voice.
