“That is my signature, Mr. Andrews, but I assure you, I did not sign for that package. I haven’t been to the office in months; my second in command has been running things,” I tell him.
“Is it possible that he was the one who signed for the package?” he asks.
“No, that’s impossible. Do you know who delivered the package? Is it possible to ask him who he gave it to?” I ask.
“Yes, I guess we can do that,” he replies. Then he types on his computer and presses his intercom.
“Jessica, please send Luke to my office,” he says.
“He should be here soon,” he tells me.
A few minutes later, there’s a knock, and a young boy, who can’t be more than eighteen or nineteen, steps in.
“You wanted to see me, Mr. Andrews?” he asks.
“Yes, Luke. I want you to take a good look at this gentleman here. Have you seen him anywhere before?” Andrews asks Luke.
“No, I don’t think I have,” Luke answers.
“Are you sure? Take a very good look at him,” Andrews tells Luke.
“Yes, I’m sure, sir,” Luke replies.
“Okay, according to my records, it says that you made a delivery to the Knight Corp headquarters six months ago, and that’s not part of your regular route,” Andrews says.
Luke looks nervous, his eyes darting around, avoiding Andrews’ gaze.
“It’s okay, Luke, you’re not in trouble, I promise you that. I’m just trying to get some answers,” Andrews assures him.
“Well, John called in sick that day, and I knew if you found out he missed another day of work, he might lose his job, so I took his routes that day. That’s why I was at Knight Corp,” Luke explains.
“You’re a good friend, Luke. Now I need you to think carefully because this is very important: who signed for the package you delivered to Knight Corp that day?” Andrews asks him.
“It was actually just one package, and it was in a manila envelope. A man signed for it because I remember the receptionist was about to sign for it, but then he took the machine from her,” Luke replies.
“Can you describe him?” I ask Luke.
“He’s tall, like five-eight, five-nine. Brown hair, brown eyes, and he wears these old-fashioned glasses with circular frames. That’s all I remember about him,” Luke says.
“Thank you, Luke. You may leave now,” Andrews tells him. Luke nods his head and leaves the office.
“Was that of any help? Do you know who you’re looking for?” Andrews asks.
“Yes, I think I do,” I tell him. I get up from my chair and shake his hand.
“I won’t forget this, and if you ever need anything, and I can help, don’t hesitate to call,” I say, and he smiles.
I walk out of his office and spot Luke.
“Luke, it’s Luke, right?” I ask him.
“Yes, sir,” he replies.
“Okay, thank you for your help in there. You seem like a very smart young man. If you’re ever looking for a better-paying job or planning to go back to school, call me,” I tell him, handing him my card. “Take care.” I leave the building and can see the receptionist trying to get my attention, but I pay her no mind and step into the elevator. I don’t need her running after me up the stairs.
As I step out of the building and walk toward the car, I dial Zeo’s number.
“Hey, what’s up?” he asks.
“I just got done at the courier company, and you won’t believe what happened. Turns out that whoever signed for the package used my signature,” I tell him.
“What the hell is going on?” he asks.
“Yeah, that was the same thing I asked myself. Luckily, the guy who delivered the package was there and described the person he delivered it to. I have an idea of who it is, but I’m not sure. Have you found anything on your end?” I ask him.
“No luck on the sign-in sheet, so I’m in the tech room now trying to get the CCTV feeds,” he tells me.
“Okay, focus only on the main receptionist desk. The courier said that she was about to sign for it, but then the man took the machine from her and signed for it himself. Also, check if she’s working today so we can ask her to verify. I’ll be there soon,” I instruct him.
“Alright, I’ll be waiting,” he says, and then hangs up.
I drive like a bat out of hell back to the company, and thankfully, I’m not stopped for speeding. We’re so close to finding out who took those pages.
I park my car and walk into the building, hearing shocked gasps. I haven’t been in the office for months, so I understand their surprise, but I don’t have time to answer questions. I head straight to the elevator and press the button for the tenth floor, where the tech room is located.
A few minutes later, the doors open, and I step out. I walk to the CCTV room and open the door. The techs are so shocked to see me.
“Gentlemen, what do we have?” I ask, snapping them out of whatever trance they’re in.
“You made it just in time, they’re pulling up the feed now,” Zeo tells me, and I join him by the monitors.
“So, you say you have an idea who took those pages?” he asks me.
“Yes, I do. But I don’t want to say anything until I see the feed first,” I reply.
“Here it is,” one of the tech guys says.
Zeo and I watch as people come in and out of the frame, and then, finally, the courier Luke steps in.
