“Yes” Flynn took this chance to get a little closer again
“Both of you?”
“Yes”Knox smiled
“And Maddie likes you?” She asked but then she cringed in pain
“What’s wrong?” Flynn asked and grabbed her hand in comfort
Her eyes shifted back and forth. For some reason Ava couldn’t hold the connection for long
“Mate?” Ava panicked
“It’s okay baby” Flynn said quietly to sooth her “You’re still weak, don’t try to hold the connection, just rest and let Maddie have control back”
“I want to stay with you” She told us and Flynn got excited
“Soon baby, soon, just rest for now”
Ava closes her eyes and when they opened again, Maddie was back but looking very startled and confused.
“What happened?”
“Ava’s awake” Knox told her and she jumped a little, I’d forgotten that she’d never heard their voices before.
“Knox? Flynn?” She looked at us nervously
“Yes, it’s so wonderful to speak to you mate” Flynn reached for her face and kissed her before Knox did the same.
“You too” She smiled “Is Ava okay, she’s asleep again”
“She was a little confused and scared but she’ll be okay” I took control back and answered her question.
“She” Jax had taken back control too but he was cut off when a loud explosion filled the air “WHAT THE F*CK?”
We both jumped up and ran to the balcony, a building several blocks away was on fire and not just one fire but several, one of a few different floors.
Jax looked at me and we linked Cole “GET DOWNTOWN NOW!”
“Already on my way, I heard the explosion” He told us “I’ll coordinate with Beta Ryker”
“We’ll meet you there!”
We cut the link and turned to Maddie who’d followed us out and was looking at the building in horror with hands over her mouth.
“I’m so sorry sweetheart but we have to go help”
“I can come” She said quickly “I can control fire, I might be able to stop it!”
“We have several gifted with the same ability already on our fire brigade teams” I told her “Stay here where it’s safe and do not leave this tower”
“It might be a coordinated attack” Jax told her as he grabbed her arm and pulled her inside “We want you safe, stay put”
“Okay but please be careful”
We both kissed her and ran from our suite, making sure to order her guards to stay by the doors and not to let anyone in.
MADELYN’S POV
I ran back out onto the balcony and looked out over the city that was filling with smoke and I prayed that not too many people were hurt
Even though the building was blocks away, I could already smell the fire and smoke and I felt guilty for staying here in safety while my mates and others ran to help.
“Maddie?”
I jumped a little “Ava?!” I squealed in delight “You’re back!”
“What’s happening?” She asked in confusion “Where did our mates go?”
“Can you see the smoke?” I asked her “There was some kind of attack so the twins went to help”
“Well come on” She said quickly “Let’s go help them”
“We can’t” I shook my head and returned inside where I closed and locked the glass sliding doors “They wouldn’t let me, we have to wait here for them”
“What!” She complained as I sat down against the wall and pulled up my knees “That’s not fare, I want to help our mates”
“Me too” I answered “But in any case, you’ve literally just woken up, you need to rest but Ava, I’m so happy that you’re back”
“I’m so sorry that I left you alone”
“Don’t blame yourself, it’s not your fault”
“It is, I should have fought harder” She sounded ashamed “I’m meant to be your sword and protect you but I failed”
“No you didn’t” I told her firmly “And it’s all worked out now, we have our mates and they’ll protect us and we will protect them”
“I want to see them again, why did they have to go?” She asked as a strange white smoke began to form in front of my eyes “Are they guards?”
I gasped a little as Ava’s body began to form out of the smoke, right before my eyes until finally she was whole.
“What?”
Ava shook out of fur and pounced around with her tail wagging
“I didn’t think that would work” She said excitedly as she jumped on top of the bed and rolled around “Is this our mates bed, it smells so good”
I giggled, she wasn’t wrong
“Can you focus please” I asked “How are you doing this?”
“It’s one of your powers” She pointed out “You can project images from your mind”
“Yes but only memories” I responded “I’ve never been able to just create something out of nothing before”
I felt extremely guilty talking about this ability, it wasn’t originally mine, it had belonged to a witch that Alpha Troy had forced me to take, but for some reason, when I went to transfer the ability to Alpha Troy it wouldn’t go
He got furious and drowned me in the river until I was nearly dead and had someone carry me home and tell Luna Morgan that I’d hit my head and fell into other lake and nearly drowned and that Alpha Troy had rescued me.
