His attempt to offer female company had clearly failed.
“You’re right. Let’s enjoy the food,” he said, picking up his chopsticks.
Everyone at the table began to eat.
I took a few bites, secretly amused.
Had Remy really just tried to “bribe” Alpha Sebastian with his secretary?
How outdated-and frankly, disgusting.
What Remy didn’t realize was that my boss had virtually no interest in women.
If he’d offered some attractive young men instead, he might have had better luck.
The mental image of Alpha Sebastian selecting male companions made me smile involuntarily.
“What’s so amusing, Celina?” Alpha Sebastian’s deep, measured voice came from beside me.
There was a hint of reproach in his tone, like a teacher catching a student passing notes.
I quickly composed myself. “Nothing at all.”
Alpha Sebastian sighed softly and placed a piece of fatty meat on my plate.
“Eat more protein. It’s good for brain function.”
I froze. Could he somehow read my thoughts?
While I stared at him, slightly alarmed, Alpha Xavien and Alpha Garvin returned.
Apparently, Alpha Garvin had managed to convince Alpha Xavien to be reasonable.
But as soon as they entered, Alpha Xavien’s eyes locked on me, noticing my intense gaze fixed on Alpha Sebastian.
Jealousy flared immediately.
Without hesitation, Alpha Xavien stepped between us, physically blocking our line of sight.
His stare was so intense I tensed, ready to bolt if necessary.
I’d already mapped out my escape route to the door.
But instead of confronting me, Alpha Xavien abruptly turned to face Alpha Sebastian.
Everyone held their breath, waiting for an explosion.
Leaning back in his chair with effortless composure, Alpha Sebastian asked smoothly, “Is something wrong, Alpha Xavien?”
Celina
Xavien kept his gaze fixed downward, his lips sealed tight.
Slowly, his hand began to rise.
“Alpha Xavien, don’t you even think about it!” I blurted out instinctively, reaching out to stop him.
If he dared to strike Alpha Sebastian, rumors would spread like wildfire-people would say Alpha Sebastian was attacked because of me.
I’d be labeled the human homewrecker, the one who sparked conflict between two powerful Alphas. The Silver Peak Pack would surely tear me apart.
Xavien’s hand froze mid-air.
He turned to face me, his eyes swimming with a mixture of heartbreak and betrayal.
I fought the urge to roll my eyes. Seriously? We signed divorce papers just yesterday, and now he’s acting as if I’ve committed the worst kind of treachery? Does he have selective amnesia?
His bitter smile said it all-his pride was deeply wounded.
I returned a forced, fake smile of my own.
Our silence spoke volumes.
He was playing the victim, trying to draw sympathy.
But I’d grown immune to his manipulations.
Xavien turned back toward the table.
The tension in the room was thick enough to cut with a knife-everyone was ready to jump in if things turned violent.
But instead of throwing a punch, he placed his hand firmly on the table, spun the lazy Susan, and grabbed a bottle of whiskey and a glass.
Alpha Sebastian’s eyes narrowed slightly in suspicion.
“Alpha Sebastian, I apologize for my lack of sincerity earlier,” Xavien said smoothly. “As punishment, I’ll take three drinks.”
He poured himself a shot and downed it in one swift gulp.
Then a second.
Then a third.
Everyone at the table watched in stunned silence.
Yet, as people marveled at what seemed like Xavien’s business savvy, something felt off.
He had promised just three drinks as penance, yet now he was on his seventh.
“That’s enough.”
“Alpha Xavien, you’ve already had more than three.”
“Someone take that bottle away from him!”
Voices of protest erupted from all sides.
Anyone who tried to reach for the glass was either shoved away or intimidated by Xavien’s fierce glare.
Alpha Sebastian let out a cold laugh. “Alpha Xavien would make a fine actor in a tragedy.”
Xavien didn’t respond, simply continuing to drink.
When the bottle was finally empty, he looked up with a challenging glint in his eyes. “Are you satisfied with my apology now, Alpha Sebastian? If not, should I get down on my knees next?”
“Still playing the victim, I see,” Alpha Sebastian said coolly.
Suddenly, Xavien swayed.
He tilted backward-directly toward me.
I jumped up and caught him immediately, knowing full well that his werewolf strength could crush me if he fell on me.
Xavien smoothly turned in my arms.
“Go sit down!” I hissed, glaring at him.
If he wanted to make a fool of himself, fine-but I refused to be part of his spectacle.
His face twisted in what looked like pain as he wrapped an arm around my waist and rested his head on my shoulder.
“My stomach hurts,” he groaned.
I wanted to punch him.
I tugged at the arm wrapped around me.
“If your stomach hurts, go to a hospital. I’m not a doctor. What good is hugging me going to do? Let go!”
Xavien pretended not to hear.
He just moaned softly, like a wounded child.
The room fell into an awkward silence.
Was he really pulling this stunt?
Everyone seemed stunned by his audacity.
Alpha Sebastian’s handsome face darkened with icy displeasure.
Without a word, he rose and stepped forward, grabbing Xavien’s hand from the side and yanking it away from my waist with firm authority. “I’ll help you,” he said flatly.
