“Maddie!” Koda quickly went over and knelt in front of her “What happened?”
I walked over and sat in the chair beside her, and looked down at the letter in her hand “What’s this?” I asked and reached for it but she gripped it and pulled it to her chest, stopping me from taking it, so I quickly lowered my hand.
“I want to go home” Was her only response, she wasn’t even looking at us and I felt a strange ache in my heart.
“Alright” Koda wound his arms around her waist and pressed his face into her neck, holding her tightly “We’ll talk at home, we’re here baby”
“Take her back to the manor” I told Koda, who pulled back and looked at me “I’ll investigate this fire”
“Right” He nodded.
“There’s nothing to investigate, the fire didn’t burn anything” Maddie told us without any emotion in her voice as she stood up
“Okay, well, I” I started to reply as she walked past me “Hey, stop, come here”
I grabbed her arm, and gently pulled her into a tight hug and breathed in her scent.
“We’ll talk later” I told her “Just go home with Cody, and rest, and I’ll be home soon’
I let her go, and she walked away, Koda and I look at each other “I’ve got her” He patted my arm and left behind our girl
“Which guard was in charge today?”
“Me, your majesty” Alex bowed
“Good” I looked him over “You stay, the rest of you, go with Madelyn and Cody”
The other two guards turned and followed “I want to know everything that happened after Madelyn met up with Tyrone”
I was fuming by the time Alex stopped talking, so her father didn’t seem to like me or Koda. Was it just normal father, future son-in-law worries or was it because we are from the family, Madelyn’s mother hated?
How dare he come back into her life, only to abandon her again? Both Knox and I were furious.
“This is the only thing that was left behind from the orb” Alex added, and held up a broken piece of it and I took it.
It felt warm and had a burn-looking symbol carved into the strange glass-like object.
“I’ve seen these symbol before” I looked down at the small fragment in my hand “Alex, return to your post”
“Yes sir”
“Oh, and Alex” I leaned down closer “If you ever go behind mine or Koda’s back again and speak to our father about our mate before informing us first, I will break your jaw. You work for us, not him”
“I’m sorry your majesty” His voice shook nervously “I was under orders, he told all the guards to relay information about the Luna”
“What information?”
“Everything” He admitted, and I felt my anger rise once more “Her whereabouts, who she speaks to, even any powers we see her use”
“Is that so” I bit my tongue “I will speak to the King, now, go”
“I’m sorry” He bowed and quickly rushed from the restaurant.
After finishing up some things at the restaurant, I returned to the tower and went straight to my parent’s office.
However, the guards blocked me when I tried to go in “I’m sorry Alpha, but the King has asked, not to be disturbed” He told me but I wasn’t in the mood.
I grabbed him by the throat, and slammed him into the door “I DON’T CARE WHAT THE F*CK THE KING WANTS!”
I threw him down and shoved open the door, and saw my father and grandmother talking at his desk, but they both looked furious at my interruption.
I slammed the door closed behind me “I want to know the real reason you’re keeping tabs on our mate!”
“HOW DARE YOU BARGE INTO MY OFFICE!” My father shouted, using his Alpha tone, and I felt myself cringe back “JUST BECAUSE YOU’VE MET YOUR MATE, IT DOESN’T MEAN YOU ARE SUDDENLY KING, I AM STILL IN CHARGE! BACK DOWN NOW, OR SO HELP ME, I WILL HAVE YOU FLOGGED!”
“THAN DO IT!” I yelled back “BUT YOU WILL ANSWER MY QUESTIONS FIRST! WHY ARE YOU KEEPING TABS ON OUR GIRL!?” I held up the fragment and showed them ‘WHY DO YOU HAVE A TATTOO THAT MATCHES THIS F*CKING SYMBOL!?”
I threw the fragment on the table and my father growled furiously and picked it up, and suddenly, all of his fight left him, and he sat down and showed my grandmother.
“So, it was her father” She said with wide, concerned eyes “They must think her molt is soon, we have to send her away before it’s too late”
“WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT!?”
“Don’t you ever yell at me again Jaxson!” My grandmother said angrily “Sit the hell down, you want to know the truth, then you’ll get it, but I promise you, you won’t like what you’re about to hear”
MADELYN’S POV
I was lying in the tub, running my hand through the bubbles that Koda had insisted any good bath needed.
He’d asked to join me, but I wanted space. I hadn’t spoken since we left the restaurant, even though he’d tried to get me to open up in the car. He finally just gave up and held me until we got home.
I felt numb, I’d been so happy getting to know Tyrone, or whatever his stupid name was, until he got the text, that ripped my heart out.
I closed my eyes and stayed in the water until it began to get cold, so I heated it with my powers.
“Where’s Madelyn?” I heard Jaxson ask, and my heart started to race at the sound of his voice.
“She wanted a bath”
“Okay”
I heard someone turn the door handle, but then Koda called out “She wants time alone, give her some space” And the handle stopped turning.
“Do I have to?” Jaxson said grumpily.
“Just leave her be” Koda sounded exasperated “What happened after I left?”
“We’ll talk later, alone” Jaxson sounded upset
“Why, what’s wrong?”
“Do you understand the word… Alone?” Jaxson asked in annoyance.
It was obvious Jaxson knew something, but didn’t want me to overhear or know about it, and it made me remember what fake Tyrone had said about the twins keeping things from me. I growled in frustration and hid under the water for a few seconds, before I ran out of air, and resurfaced, and finally climbed out.
I wrapped one of the towels around my body and left the bathroom, leaving a trail of wet footprints behind me. The twins were sitting by an open fire, and the room was nice and toasty.
They turned and looked at me. I could tell they wanted to bombard me with questions, but they held their tongues, and I quickly rushed to the walk-in, and dressed in a long black nightgown, even though it was only midday, all I wanted to do, was curl up in bed.
