Chapter 21 – Tale Of The Shadow Sister

Mary’s expression mirrored Elora’s sadness. “It’s incredible,” she said sympathetically, shaking her head. “Especially considering she passed the MCAT.”

The other two nurses looked surprised. “You passed the MCAT?” one of them asked, impressed.

Elora nodded. “Yes, but it seems that’s not enough to land an entry-level job, when I have no work experience,” she replied with a sigh.

The conversation turned to potential opportunities, and one of the nurses mentioned that the emergency department was searching for a receptionist. However, she added that the role required some knowledge of medical terms and good IT knowledge.

Elora’s eyes lit up with renewed hope. “I’m aware of that,” she said eagerly. “I’m willing to learn, and I’d even work a few days for free Just for the chance.”

The nurse nodded thoughtfully. “I’ll speak with my department and see if the role is still open and if they are willing to give you a chance,” she promised.

“No worries, I am grateful for any chance,” Elora replied.

At the end of the day, after another round of job-hunting, Elora met Mary in the hospital lobby, her heart pounding with anticipation. Mary had a smile on her face as she approached Elora.

“Elora, I have some good news for you,” Mary began, her eyes twinkling with excitement. “The emergency department has a strong staff shortage, and the department has decided to give you a chance.”

Elora’s eyes widened in disbelief. “Really? Are you serious?” she exclaimed, unable to contain her joy.

Mary nodded, her smile widening. “Yes, they’re willing to take you on board on a trial basis to see if you can be a good match for them or not. You are starting from tomorrow.”

But Elora’s elation quickly turned to panic as she realized she had nothing suitable to wear for work. “I don’t have any proper clothes,” she confessed, feeling a wave of embarrassment wash over her. “I’ll have to find a second-hand store or something.”

Mary shook her head, her expression firm. “Nonsense, Elora. You’re not going to a second-hand store,” she said decisively, taking Elora by the arm and leading her towards a nearby clothing store,

Inside, Mary picked out a few sets of professional attire for Elora, insisting on paying for them despite Elora’s protests. “Consider this a gift to celebrate your new job,” Mary said firmly, her eyes warm with kindness.

Elora was overwhelmed with gratitude as she accepted the clothes. “Thank you, Mary. I don’t know how to repay you,” she said, her voice choked with emotion.

Mary simply smiled and squeezed Elora’s hand. “You don’t need to repay me, dear. Just focus on doing your best at your new job. You deserve this new chapter,” she replied, her voice filled with pride.

The next days passed in a whirlwind of activity for Elora. To everyone’s surprise, she adapted quickly to her new role in the hospital. The medical staff took an instant liking to the tiny girl with a big heart, and Elora found herself surrounded by supportive colleagues who were eager to help her learn the ropes.

Each day brought new challenges, but Elora faced them with determination and a sense of hope that she hadn’t felt in a long time. With each passing shift, she gained more confidence in her abilities and grew more comfortable in her role.

So it came as no surprise when the hospital administration approached her with an offer of a permanent contract. Elora was filled with gratitude as she accepted the offer, knowing that this was the fresh start she had been hoping for, her new chapter.

Elora’s days at the hospital were filled with purpose and fulfilment, but there was a lingering shadow that followed her. Despite her newfound happiness, she still experienced occasional nightmares, and her health wasn’t quite right. She found herself feeling queasy in the mornings, often unable to keep her breakfast down.

One day, during a ordinary off day, Mary noticed Elora looking unwell and asked if she was still sick.

Mary asked, “Are you feeling okay, Lora? You don’t look too good.”

Elora tried to brush it off, forcing a weak smile. “I’m fine, Mary. Just a bit tired, that’s all. The same issue with the vomiting, probably due to stress.”

But Mary, with years of nursing experience, could tell that something deeper was going on and after a few moments of thinking, she asked, “When was the last time you had your period?”

Elora froze, her heart skipping a beat. After a few more moments she felt a surge of panic rising within her. “Um… I… I’m not sure, actually.”

Mary’s concern deepened, and she took Elora’s hand gently. “Lora, it’s important. Try to remember. Have you used any of the sanitary products since your hospital discharge?”

“No, my period has never come since I arrived here,” she replied in a small voice.

Mary looked at her with curiosity.

Elora hesitated before admitting blushing, her voice barely above a whisper, “My only… experience was in the woods before I was banished. With the alpha who saved me. And… he… he… knotted

But it was only one time.”

Mary’s eyes widened in shock, her hand instinctively moving to her mouth, “What? Lora, you need to see a doctor. And take a pregnancy test. Now.”

“I don’t know what, how…” Elora mumbled, but Mary interrupted her.

“Don’t worry, sweetheart, go and get dressed and after breakfast we can go to a drug store.
