Chapter 15 – Tale Of The Shadow Sister

“Forget about rent, honey, I know your condition and keep the money for you. You can help me with the household chores in exchange until you find a job.” Overwhelmed by the nurse’s kindness, Elora nodded in agreement, feeling a glimmer of hope flicker within her heart.

“I’ll gladly help out however I can. Thank you, Nurse Mary, thank you so much,” Elora said, her voice wavering with emotion.

“OK then, it’s set. Meet me here in 2 hours when I will finish my shift and we can go. And, call me Mary.” With tears of gratitude glistening in her eyes, Elora nodded, feeling a newfound sense of relief wash over her.

After Nurse Mary left, she decided to wait there, as not having any means of telling time, she was scared not to be late. As Elora sat waiting anxiously in the hospital lobby on a bench, her mind swirled with a whirlwind of emotions. The steady stream of people coming and going only served to amplify her sense of isolation and despair. Just a few months ago, she had been eagerly anticipating her future, preparing herself to embark on attending medical school and then, working in a hospital like this for some time. Now, she found herself cast adrift, a rogue without a pack and without her cherished wolf by her side.

The memory of Lina brought both sorrow and determination to Elora’s heart. Despite the overwhelming sadness that engulfed her, a spark of resilience ignited within her soul. She had made a promise to her wolf when they were floating on that river, a promise to survive, and she was determined to honor that pledge. She couldn’t bear the thought of letting Lina’s sacrifice go in vain, knowing that her wolf had given everything to keep her alive.

With tears glistening in her eyes, Elora silently vowed to herself that she would find a way to carry on, to carve out a new path for herself in this unfamiliar world, away from anything that meant werewolves, packs and alphas.

In her turmoil, a sudden flash of recollection pierced through Elora’s thoughts like a bolt of lightning. She remembered the enigmatic Alpha who had come to her rescue in the forest. Despite the circumstances, she couldn’t shake the memory of how he had treated her with kindness, desire and care, a stark contrast to the cold indifference she had experienced from her own mate. The memories of their moments together made her blush hard, especially the gentle caressing while they were knotted; something in her lower abdomen trembled at her recollection and she squeezed her knees.

As she sat in the hospital lobby, waiting for Nurse Mary, Elora’s mind wandered back to that moment when the Alpha had asked her to meet him at 5 PM. Probably when she did not show up, he thought what was worse about her, and her heart squeezed in another disappointment.

Though she knew little about him, Elora couldn’t deny the strange sense of comfort she felt at the thought of seeing him again; only if she could see his face, but he must be handsome. All Alphas were genetically gifted to be powerful and attractive.

Her thoughts were interrupted by Nurse Mary, who was dressed in casual clothes, as she called her, “Lora!….. Lora!!… Lora, let’s go.”

Elora rushed towards nurse Mary, and together they made their way towards the parking lot where a brown pick-up was parked.

After they climbed into the car, as Nurse Mary navigated the winding roads, Elora couldn’t shake the feeling of unease that gripped her heart. With each passing mile, the dense canopy of trees seemed to close in around them, casting eerie shadows across the landscape.

Feeling the weight of Elora’s gaze, Nurse Mary glanced at her with a sympathetic expression.

“What is the matter, dear?

Elora cleared her voice and asked in a trembling voice, “Are we in any pack territory?” a shiver of dread cursing through her body.

“Don’t worry, dear,” Mary reassured, her voice gentle. “This area belongs to the humans, but we are at the outskirts of Stormheart Pack.”

Elora’s heart skipped a beat at the mention of the pack’s name, her mind racing with fear and uncertainty. “Stormheart?” she echoed, her voice trembling with apprehension. “But isn’t that… Azriel Storm’s territory?”

Nurse Mary glanced at her with a sympathetic expression, noting the panic that flickered in Elora’s eyes. “Yes, it is. It seems that you are familiar with the packs” she confirmed gently. “But you have nothing to worry about, my dear. You’re safe with me.”

Elora swallowed hard, her mind swirling with dread as she recalled the stories she’d heard about Azriel Storm, the formidable Alpha known as the Deathstrike and recalled the only time when she saw him. Something about his memory made her freeze in place, his imposing muscular frame, his cold and calculated gaze, his powerful aura and total dominance over those around him. “But what if they find out I’m here?” she asked, her voice tinged with desperation.

Nurse Mary reached out a reassuring hand, placing it gently on Elora’s arm. “You needn’t worry,” she said soothingly. “Once your wolf left you, you no longer carry the scent of a rogue. You’re just a young human woman in need of help.”

“What about you? Are you safe from them?” Elora asked with a trembling voice.

“Don’t worry about me, as Stormheart is my pack, so I am safe.” Nurse Mary smiled at her.

Elora nodded slowly, her heart still racing with fear but finding a sliver of solace in Nurse Mary’s words. “Thank you,” she whispered, her voice barely above a whisper. “I don’t know what I would do without you.”

The nurse offered her a warm smile, her eyes filled with compassion. “You don’t have to face this alone,” she said softly.

As the truck rolled to a stop in front of the charming cottage, Elora couldn’t help but marvel at the serene surroundings. Tall trees enveloped the area, casting dappled shadows on the lush greenery. “It’s so beautiful here,” she murmured, her voice filled with wonder and sadness.

Nurse Mary offered her a sympathetic smile as she stepped out of the vehicle. “What’s on your mind, sweetheart?” she asked gently, noticing the hint of sadness in girl’s expression.

Elora sighed softly, her gaze lingering on the tranquil scene before her. “Lina would have loved it here,” she admitted quietly, her voice tinged with longing.

Nurse Mary placed a comforting hand on Elora’s shoulder, offering her silent support. “I’m sure she would have,” she said softly, her own heart heavy with empathy. “Let’s go inside, dear.”

With a heavy heart, Elora followed Nurse Mary up the path to the cottage, her mind filled with memories of her beloved wolf.

Once inside the cozy cottage, Nurse Mary guided Elora to her room, offering her a warm smile as she settled in. “Dinner will be ready in about 30 minutes,” she informed Elora before leaving her to unpack.

Elora quickly stowed away her few belongings before feeling a surge of determination. She wanted to repay Nurse Mary’s kindness by helping with dinner, so she hurried to the kitchen to lend a hand.

As they sat down at the table for dinner, Nurse Mary looked at Elora with a gentle expression. “You know, you don’t have to rush into finding a job,” she said kindly. “Take a few days to settle in and rest.”

But Elora shook her head, her resolve unwavering. “I appreciate your kindness, but I need to find something as soon as possible,” she insisted. “I want to feel useful again, to be able to contribute.”
