“Good” Suzette said softly. “Now she can die quietly.”
They lifted me onto a stretcher. The ceiling lights streaked past.
In the elevator Dr. Oaken whispered, “This is wrong. This is so wrong.”
“Then pray she dies fast” Suzette replied.
The doors opened. Cold air hit my skin. They slid me into a car.
“Take her to the abandoned warehouse on the back hill” Suzette said. “Leave her there. I will handle the rest.”
“Luna please” Dr. Oaken begged.
“Drive.”
The engine roared.
I could not cry. I could not blink. My wolf whimpered inside me.
Then a mindlink sliced into my skull.
It sounded like Charley.
“Alpha William please answer. Miss Jessica is missing. I cannot find her. Please answer the link.”
Charley was not reporting to Johan.
She was calling Alpha William.
Who was it?
Jessica’s POV
Everything was a blur when I woke up.
My body felt heavy and no matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t move.
My tongue felt glued to the roof of my mouth. My limbs wouldn’t obey me.
Panic tore at my insides when I realized I wasn’t in a hospital bed anymore. I was in some dark, dusty warehouse, tied up somewhere behind a stack of crates.
My wolf was trapped deep inside me, muffled and drugged too, clawing weakly against the fog but unable to break through. She was growling just as loudly as I was, but neither of us could escape the paralysis holding us down.
I heard Suzette’s laugh getting closer and closer.
Then she stood over me like a queen admiring her handiwork.
“Look at you,” she said as she looked down at me. “Pathetic again. Doesn’t this feel familiar? Me torturing you all over again? Only this time, you can’t even react.”
Her words sliced through me, and I could only scream inside my own head. Suzette didn’t stop. She turned to Dr. Oaken. “How long will the drug stay in her system?”
He adjusted his glasses and answered calmly, “An hour more.”
Suzette clicked her tongue. “Then let’s get this done as soon as possible.”
She crouched down in front of me, shaking her head with mock pity. “I should have finished you ten years ago. None of this would be happening now. Johan wouldn’t even know your name. I regret not ending you back then. But good thing it’s never too late, right?”
Inside my head I screamed her name. ‘You’re insane, Suzette. How can you be this cruel? You think like a criminal. The Moon Goddess will punish you for this.’
Then I heard Suzette snap her fingers sharply. “Alright, tie me to the chair and start filming.”
One of the men obeyed immediately, dragging a chair into the open and binding her wrists loosely, just enough to look convincing on camera.
Suzette turned to Dr. Oaken. “Video call Johan. Make sure the phone is on me.”
My thoughts spun wildly. ‘What is she doing now? Why is she staging this nonsense? What twisted game is she playing?’
The call connected almost instantly.
Johan’s voice exploded through the speaker. “Suzette?!”
Suzette immediately burst into fake sobs. “Johan, help me! I was kidnapped. They tied me up in a warehouse behind the hospital. Please, Johan, please save me!”
I heard Johan’s voice tighten with panic. “I’m coming.”
I tried to move, but I couldn’t even feel my muscles. The drug they used on me made my whole body useless.
All I could do was watch, wide-eyed, as Suzette calmly ordered the men around her. She talked like she owned the place, like she owned Johan.
Then I heard fire crackling.
One of the men lit a pile of flammable junk near me. Flames shot up fast, heat slamming into my skin. My wolf whimpered inside me, desperate to shift, desperate to heal us, but the drug crushed her down like a boot on her throat. I could feel her panic blending with mine, two heartbeats trapped in one dying body. Smoke filled my lungs, sharp and choking.
I coughed but no real sound came out. My eyes watered as the smoke thickened.
Johan’s voice suddenly thundered through the warehouse, but he only called for Suzette. The desperation in his voice stabbed through me. I tried to make any sound, any noise, dragging every ounce of strength in my shaking body to push even a tiny breath out.
He didn’t hear me.
Suzette pretended to cry, and Johan ran to her like she was the only life he had left. He untied her, lifted her into his arms, and walked out through the flames with her. He didn’t look around. Didn’t check the shadows. Didn’t turn back.
He didn’t see me.
Inside my head I was screaming, fighting against the useless weight of my own body.
‘I’m here. Johan, I’m right here. Why can’t you see me?’
My mind was shaking from fear and anger.
‘How can you not feel me? I’m burning alive, and you’re looking everywhere except at me. I’m dying and you don’t even notice.’
The words kept crashing inside me with nowhere to go, trapped the same way I was.
As he disappeared, heat slammed into me again. My skin felt like it was blistering. The smoke scraped down my throat like sandpaper. My vision blurred. My wolf begged me to hold on, begged me not to give up, but she was fading faster than I was. The drug was choking her instincts, smothering her strength, turning both of us into prey. I could smell my own skin burning.
A single tear slid down my cheek. Falling in love with him had been a fatal mistake.
In that moment, my thoughts drifted to the man who had slowly become my quiet anchor, the one who stepped in for me twice when no one else bothered. The night we shared a bed… I understand now he had been saving me long before I knew I needed saving.
I missed his charm. His smug, lopsided smile. The way danger softened in his hands like it feared him, not the other way around. And gods… I still owed him that personalized perfume. That tiny promise I never kept.
I wondered if he would ever know what happened to me. If he would try to save me again. If he would even get the chance.
But deep down, I knew it was already too late.
My body felt like it was melting into the floor.
I thought I was already dying when some voice shrill scream cut through the air outside.
“Jessica’s still inside!”
For a split second, hope flickered inside me.
Maybe this wasn’t my end. Maybe someone finally realized I mattered. My chest tightened, my eyes burned, not just from the smoke but from the sudden, stupid rush of emotion.
I wanted to live. My wolf wanted it too, crying out inside me, pushing her last bit of strength into my chest. I wanted to be saved. I wasn’t ready to die here, not like this.
The ceiling cracked. Sparks fell. The roof collapsed. Flames swallowed everything.
Through the roar of the fire, Johan’s voice tore through the inferno, furious and terrified:
“Jessica!”
And then he threw himself back into the flames.
Suzette’s POV
“Jessica!”
The moment he shouted Jessica’s name, something inside me just broke, sharp and sudden, like my chest cracked open.
“Alpha, no!”
Everyone ran after him, trying to pull him back from the burning warehouse. Even I grabbed his clothes, clinging so hard my nails broke.
How could this be happening? How could he act like this for her?
Wasn’t I the one he loved most? Wasn’t I the one he married? Wasn’t I the Luna? His mate?
He had always protected me. Everything I wanted, he fought for. Anything I hated, he destroyed. Even when I shattered Jessica’s hand, even when I ruined her future as a perfumer, he did not blame me. He covered for me. He saved me.
He let me take Jessica’s identity just to keep me smiling.
So why… why the hell was he acting like his soul was being ripped out just because she might die?
Jealousy burned hotter than the fire in front of us, raking at me hard enough to shake my bones.
“Johan, the fire is too big! You will die if you go in!” I screamed because I had to. I needed him alive.
He didn’t even look at me.
“Let go of me! Let go!” He was pushing everyone aside, eyes locked on the flames like they were some portal leading to his heart.
My stomach twisted.
My wolf recoiled.
