Chapter 20 – The War God Alphas Arranged Bride

Now that the issue at hand had been dealt with, I too was eager to leave the camps and

head back to the house. Yet the second I started to make my way toward the door, Alexander spoke out.

“Wait,” he said. My whole body went still. “Stay. I think we should talk.”

Talk?

I awkwardly spotted an empty chair nearby and pulled it over to Alexander. I felt a tad bit sheepish, after everything that had just happened.

“It’s been gradually occurring to me that we may have more in common with one another than we thought,” he said.

“Are you referring to the fact that we both happen to have infuriating Stepmothers who have a knack for meddling in matters that don’t pertain to them?”

Alexander snorted. “That’s putting things lightly. But. yes.”

I let out a long breath and sagged back into the chair. “You have no idea how shocked I was when you pulled out that necklace from that box before.”

“No more surprised than I was,” he professed. “The necklace that I have once belonged to my mother. From what I can remember her telling me about the piece, the craftsman who designed it originated from the Southeast.”

As it turned out, both of our mothers had originally come from packs in the Southeast. However, I was quick to notice the energy in the room shift with small waves of growing tension when he began talking about the Alpha King’s obsessive need for control.

“He’d purposely taken over both packs. He claimed that the Southeastern packs were run by Alphas who didn’t know what they were doing. But, I knew it was really because those Alphas were too good at their jobs and it made the King feel threatened.”

He was by no means wrong about his opinion on the matter. The Alpha King was cruel. He used his fear of losing power to justify his actions. As it turned out, our mothers both lost many relatives and loved ones against the King’s soldiers. Those who managed to escape the takeover were hunted ruthlessly and were formerly known as rogues.

“Afterward, the Alpha King established a vacation place in that area, and some speculated that the beautiful lands had been annexed for his living place there, but that was just a rumor that faded after a while,” he explained.

Apparently, in the Southeast region, there were similar customs among those packs, with people fond of weaving jewelry.

“So, I take it that Aquamarine was a gemstone that all the women in Alpha families wore?” I asked.

He gave me a gentle smile and nodded his head.

I would have never thought I would share one of the best conversations about my mother and her heritage with someone like Alexander. He was able to tell me things that I had never even known about her. Unfortunately, as the enthusiasm and excitement died down, there too came the sad reality.

“My mother died due to the family’s downfall,” I admitted. “Many people had claimed that it was because she was severely

struggling with postpartum depression after she had me and my brother. But, I always had a feeling that it was more than that. I believe it was her spirit that was broken.”

Although I had never admitted it out loud, a large part of myself blamed the Alpha King for the ruin of my mother’s health. I tried to hide the malice in my voice as I spoke.

“Between you and me, I dislike the Alpha King for reasons that the rest of my family never understood. If someone like you were to openly go against the King and replace him. I’d say, you have my full support.”

“My, my. That’s quite the rebellious remark,” he chuckled. “…I hate him too.”

My heart rate picked up in my chest. I was shocked that Alexander was willing to admit something so personal to me.

Considering the man had me held at gunpoint twice now.

“My army is what I’ve been preparing to fight him.”

My lips parted in shock. Right as I was going

to speak, Oliver came through the door.

“Sir, the soldiers are ready for their military review,” he said.

I took that as my silent signal to head back to the house; however, Alexander stopped me by reaching out for my hand. My heart jumped into my throat.

“Hold on,” he said. Once more, I stopped. “Would you want to see my soldiers?”

[Evelyn’s POV]

It truly took me a solid moment to realize what Alexander had just asked of me. Did he truly want me to see his soldiers? Did he mean it?

Under normal, much less arranged circumstances, usually Alphas and their Lunas were allowed to attend the military review. It was a chance for Alpha’s to address their packs, specifically their soldiers and acknowledge both strengths and weak points.

It was also a vital time to discuss upcoming events as well as future plans. It was a crucial time to show support where it was needed and address any sort of concerns.

It was, in all sense of the word, ‘normal’ and very common for Alphas to include their Luna in on such affairs. However, the relationship between Alexander and myself was really anything but normal.

It was, primarily, the reason why I was so stunned.

This was a huge feat. Alexander trusted me enough to where he felt comfortable having me involved in this part of his life. This was huge.

This entire concept went so much further beyond mere trust. It meant that he was willing to acknowledge me as his Luna.

I blinked back the emotion in my eyes and nodded my head.

Alexander graced me with a pleased smile. “Good. Let’s head out.”

I wasn’t going to lie…I was nervous.

It was one thing to talk to a handful of guards, but it was a completely other scenario when I was surrounded by several hundreds of soldiers. Armed.

But for what it was all worth, it was easy to say that everyone was just as curious about me as I was about them. From the moment Alexander and I entered the large open field area, I felt countless eyes drift over me.

“Who’s that?” one of them asked.

“I’m not sure.”

“One of the guards closer to base camp said they saw her walking with one of the doctors.”

Ugh, just the thought of Fiona sent my blood ablaze. I still had a hard time comprehending the danger she was trying to put me in.

I never thought myself to be vindictive or vengeful. With a Step Sister like Samantha, I had learned from a very early age to let a lot of my inner anger go. However, with Fiona, it felt different. Samantha’s comments never held much weight. I knew that they were backed with childish immaturity.

Fiona was looking to get me thrown out of the pack – hell, possibly to have me killed.

Her jealousy seemed to run much deeper than anyone gave her credit for. It all made me wonder…Was Alexander aware of how dangerous she was?

Maybe Alexander has a reason for his actions…

In any case, I was relieved that our paths weren’t going to cross anytime soon. It would give me a chance to really focus on my responsibilities as Luna without the worry of possible interference.

Yes, for the time being, I chose to drop the thought. Especially because there were so many other important things happening around me. The several hundreds of soldiers openly stared at me with questionable looks.
