Chapter 217 – Mated To My Obsessive Stepbrother (Kester & Kasmine) Novel Free Online by Velvet Desires

“Kester…?” She called as if unsure if I was there to yell at her again or to tell her I was sorry.

She looked so breakale. And yet, there was this strange, soft power in her gaze, like a candle refusing to go out in the wind.

Her eyes always did that to me… stirred something warm I didn’t want to feel.

She looked like she needed to be protected by someone bigger and stronger than her. She had to be protected from the world. She looked so little and innocent.

I walked toward her bed, dragging my feet a little, then sat down on the edge. It was awkward. I really didn’t know what to say. But I had to…

“I, uhm…” I rubbed the back of my neck, eyes fixed on the toy-strewn carpet. “I’m sorry…” for yelling at you earlier.”

Her whole face brightened like forgiveness had already been waiting on the tip of her tongue.

“It’s okay, Kester. You were upset,” she said gently. “I forgive you.”

I almost laughed. Forgive me? Just like that? It was that easy?

“Thanks,” I muttered, managing a small chuckle I didn’t quite feel. I was about to stand and make my escape, but her hand caught my wrist.

Her small hands were like that of an angel. It always made me feel calm and peaceful, even though I always yelled at her whenever she touched me.

“Why are you always so sad?” she asked, tilting her head, those innocent eyes scanning my face with an honesty that cut. “Don’t you have friends?”

I looked away.

“I have a friend. Norlan. Just him.”

She nodded as if that somehow made sense.

“Maybe…” she started, although she sounded uncertain, “maybe I can be your friend? If you don’t want me to be your sister. We could play together. Or watch a movie. I don’t like it when you’re sad all the time. Or alone.” She said in the most innocent way ever but she didn’t know how much those words meant to me.

She truly did care about me.

She held my gaze, waiting for my response. I was at a loss for words)

But I shook my head and scoffed, “You can’t be my friend or anywhere around me, Kasmine. I’ll hurt you… With my words or my actions or… No. I can’t let you my friend,” I stood up immediately mad at myself for even letting my guard down.

“You won’t hurt me, Kester,” she stood up with me, tilting up her head so she could hold my gaze. “I want you to be my friend. I don’t want us to fight every time.”

I hesitated. My fingers twitched at my sides.

“Why do you think I won’t hurt you?” My voice cracked despite myself. “You don’t even know me.”

“I know you won’t,” she said simply, stepping closer. “I trust you, Kester. You’re my big brother.”

And just like that….I couldn’t breathe.

Author’s Note: One more chapter coming in tonight. But.. brace yourselves because you might shed a tear or two when you read it.

#winks.

Lashann Whyte Bartlett… I am waiting patiently all the way from barbados tre

KESTER.

I didn’t wait. I dived into my car and drove off, leaving Norlan behind. I knew he’d catch up. Couldn’t spare those few seconds waiting for him to meet me in my car. Besides, he came with his own car.

The tires screeched against the asphalt as I tore out of the driveway, the wheel jerking beneath my palms. Horns blared. Lights flashed. People cursed.

I didn’t give a fuck.

I wasn’t thinking about traffic rules or red lights or who the hell was in my way. I drove like a madman on a mission.

My mate could be bleeding out in some-sterile, white hallway or lying cold in a goddamn morgue. And I didn’t even know.

I tried calling Kasmine’s phone, but it wasn’t connecting.

Fuck.

I called Cole. The bastard always picked up, except today.

“Pick up the damn phone, Cole!” I yelled, slamming my fist once against the steering wheel.

No answer.

I gritted my teeth so hard my jaw ached.

I knew it. I fucking felt it. It had been tugging at my consciousness for days now… that feeling in my gut like the earth had tilted a little to the side..

It was all too real… It all felt like the calm before the storm when I saw everything finally falling in pleasant places.

I knew it was all too easy. I fucking knew it.

I looked in the rear mirror and saw Norlan’s car speeding behind me

We were just minutes away.

Cole hadn’t told me the name of the hospital… Or, maybe he did, but I was too carried away to even hear him.

But I knew where she was. Thanks to her necklace, I could find her blindfolded. She was still somewhere around the pack. Normally, we had to drive for three hours to get there. But with this speed, we were already almost there in two… I gripped the wheel tighter, my heart pounding like it wanted out of my fucking chest.

“Please be safe for me, baby. Be safe.” I kept chanting. That was all that mattered. Her safety. The culprit would pay after that.

But what if I got there and it was already too late?

What if the last time I held her was the last time I would ever hold her?

That thought alone felt like a knife being twisted into my spine.

A loud CRASH yanked my attention back to my surroundings.

I heard metal shredding metal, tires shrieking, and glass exploding to the air.

I slammed my foot on the brakes. The tires screeched so hard that the whole car spun slightly before jerking to a violent stop in the middle of the road.

I stared into the rearview mirror, wide-eyed.

“Fuck -!”

Norlan’s car wasn’t behind me anymore.

It was sideways, smashed into the divider rail that bordered the steep slope leading into the old construction site. That stretch of road was narrow as hell and barely lit – sharp curve, poor visibility, steep fall.

Perfect for a fucking ightmare.

He’d tried to swerve and missed.

The front of his car was crumpled like paper. The roof had caved slightly. One of the front wheels was completely off Steam hissed from the hood. One of the back doors was hanging open, and there was no movement. No fucking movement.
