Ridiculous!
The truth is, her weak body came from her mixed bloodline. That’s all.
Just then, a salesgirl with white gloves carried out a pair of limited-edition heels in a velvet box. I had spent 2,000,000 dollars and waited a month for these custom shoes.
The salesgirl bent down, ready to help me try them on. I lifted my hand to stop her.
I looked straight at Deanna and commanded, “Deanna, come put on my shoes. Do that, and I’ll tell Jake to stay away from Peggie.”
I narrowed my eyes at her. “You’ve been with my son all these years, and you can’t even handle one Peggie. Jake is an Alpha. He will never have just one woman. If you want to be his Luna, the first thing you need to learn is how to swallow your pride and endure this.”
Deanna didn’t step forward like she used to. Instead, she laughed at my words.
“Mrs. Olson, I remember something. Didn’t Jake’s dad have an affair with an actress years ago? And you hired people to smear her online, calling her a homewrecker until her career was ruined. If I recall right, that actress was even pregnant. You paid someone to rough her up until she lost the baby. You were once a Luna yourself, but that method of yours was hardly patient or forgiving.”
“You brat!” My whole body shook with rage. I pointed at her, but I couldn’t form a full sentence.
That scandal had been buried so deep, only a few people in the pack ever knew the truth. And yet here Deanna was, daring to drag my darkest secret out into the open!
“Deanna, y-you slut! Stop making up lies! I’ll make sure my son dumps you. Just wait and see.”
“That’s fine by me,” she said calmly. “The standards for being the Luna of your pack are too high anyway. I don’t think I have what it takes. I’ll leave the position for someone else who wants it.”
She turned and walked away.
Valda leaned close, whispering, “Was that really Deanna? Did she lose her mind, talking to you like that?”
The fire in my chest nearly burst out. I slammed my hand against the display stand.
“Lose her mind? No. But I’ll make her regret this. I’ll make Jake dump her for good! And from now on, none of you are allowed to call her my daughter-in-law, or you’ll have a problem with me.”
Karen blinked. “Barbara … about that actress Deanna mentioned. Did you really do something like that back then?”
“Of course not!”
I snapped, nearly shouting. My voice cracked with anger. “She made it all up!”
Jake’s POV:
I was in the middle of a meeting when noise broke out in the hallway.
“Move aside!”
“Mrs. Olson, Alpha is in a meeting. Why don’t you wait in the office a while?” Axel’s voice followed after.
“I need to see my son. Do I need permission now?”
A moment later, the conference room door swung open.
My mother stood in the doorway, clutching her Hermes bag, her face dark with fury.
I looked up, then told the executives at the table, “The meeting is over.”
Everyone quickly gathered their notebooks and filed out.
Axel quietly closed the door behind them, leaving the room to us.
“What’s so urgent you had to rush in here?” I asked flatly.
Jake’s POV:
I leaned back in my chair, face calm and distant.
My mother’s arrogance no longer surprised me.
She marched up to the conference table and dropped her bag down with a loud thud. “What’s going on with you and that Omega?”
My brows tightened. I knew where this was going. Sure enough, she raised her voice.
“I saw her at the mall today. That woman had the nerve to talk back to me. I told you before – her manners are terrible. Even her birth parents don’t think much of her. Why bother with her? Good thing you two are only engaged, not yet holding the mating ceremony. Let’s just call it off. I’ll find you a proper daughter from a better family.”
She didn’t stop there. “And that Peggie – stay away from her too. Don’t fall for her story about leaving you and then getting a heart condition. She’s just trying to pin her problems on you. These women are all the same, one worse than the next.”
Listening to her go on and on, frustration burned in me. “Mom, stay out of my love life.”
Her eyes flashed. “Of course they’re my business! You’re the only sole future Alpha of the Olsendreich Pack. Your Luna represents the reputation of this pack and the future bloodline. I never liked Deanna, but you insisted she clung to you so much that I gave in. Now her true colors are showing. You need to dump her today.”
“I won’t break up with her,” I said without hesitation.
“What? After everything she’s done, you still won’t leave her? Jake, you’re out of your mind.”
I stood up, done with her ranting.
“As the Alpha, I’ll handle my duty. But my marriage is none of your business. And stop picking on Deanna.”
I turned and walked out.
Behind me, her loud voice echoed, “How is this me picking on her? She embarrassed me in public today and made me look bad in front of everyone!”
Outside the meeting room, I called Axel over.
“Has LA finished the ceremonial gown?”
“It’s ready,” Axel replied. “I also secured the Everlove jewelry set from the auction house. Everything’s waiting for Ms. Deanna to try on.”
The Everlove set had cost me fifty million dollars.
But I didn’t care. I had promised Deanna the grandest wedding anyone had ever seen. She would be the most beautiful bride.
I was lost in thought when my phone rang.
It was Peggie.
I answered. Her gentle, cheerful voice came through.
“Jake, I had some free time today, so I made desserts. Want to come try them?”
“I can’t make it today.”
Her voice fell flat.
“Oh! Is something going on?”
I hesitated, then said, “Deanna’s trying on her ceremonial gown today.”
Peggie’s POV:
My hand froze around the phone.ceremonial gown?
Did that mean the mating ceremony date was set?
Fear clawed up my spine, nearly drowning me.
My voice shook as I blurted, “Jake, I know I’m asking too much. But I’m scheduled for a heart transplant next week. Can you wait until after my surgery before you two move forward with the gown fitting?”
His tone turned cold. “Peggie, the transplant is about your health. You can’t use it as leverage. Jorge will take good care of you.”
The line went dead before I could answer.
I stared at the dark phone screen, frustration and anger rushing through me. With a sharp motion, I tossed the phone onto the bed.
Last night I pretended to faint just to make Jake stay. But even then, he was restless the whole time. He tried to leave more than once. If I hadn’t cried and begged, saying I was afraid something might happen in the middle of the night, he never would have stayed.
Lately, I could feel it – Jake’s patience with me was wearing thin. He wasn’t treating me with the same care as before.
No.
I couldn’t let this keep going. If it did, Jake would end up choosing Deanna over me.
Just as my thoughts spun out of control, the door to the hospital room opened. Jorge walked in with a tray of medicine.
When he saw me wiping tears from my face, his shoes clicked softly against the floor. His eyes were heavy with worry.
“Peggie, time for your medicine.” His voice was as gentle as always as he held the pills out to me.
“Jake said he’s taking Deanna to try on her ceremonial gown for the mating ceremony. Where are they going? I have to stop them.”
Jorge pressed a firm hand on my shoulder. “Peggie, you’re about to have heart surgery. You can’t get worked up.”
“If Jake made that woman his Luna, then what’s the point of saving this heart? It won’t matter anymore!” I broke free from his hand, tears spilling down like beads from a broken necklace.
Jorge’s voice rose sharply. “Do you have any idea how much money and effort went into finding this donor heart? People wait their entire lives and never get the chance you’re getting! And you still don’t treasure it?”
The anger in his voice made me flinch. I realized I had gone too far. Quickly, I lowered my eyes and cried harder. “Jorge, I’m sorry. I just love Jake too much. I’m scared that once I recover, he won’t come see me anymore.”
Jorge let out a long sigh. His tone softened again. “Jake isn’t like that. He wants you to get better. Think about it – since you came back, he’s been by your side every time you needed him. He cares about you.”
I wiped at my wet cheeks, nodding.
“You’re right. Jake’s been so good to me. I need to get well so I can be worthy of him.”
Jorge’s eyes flickered with something complicated. He sighed again and said quietly, “Peggie, sometimes … Maybe you should pay attention to the people standing right next to you too, okay?”
“What did you say, Jorge?” I blinked at him, pretending not to understand, my eyes still glistening with tears.
He shook his head. “Nothing. Just take your medicine. I’ll go cut you an apple.”
I gave him a small smile. “Jorge, you’re so good to me.”
Deanna’s POV:
I had just sat down in my office chair when I saw the confirmation notice. A 40 billion investment had cleared.
The amount was so huge that Mooncrown Pack had to wire it in two parts.
