She found it weird too because her father simply knew. For someone, who did not trust other people easily, her father entrusted a business to a ten years old and on top of that a girl, it was already weird enough, but she didn’t think much about it until Khaos questioned it.
“What happened? Did you find something wrong?” Zuri snuggled against his chest, she felt
most comfortable in his arms.
Khaos didn’t answer the question and simply asked someone to bring food inside. He watched her eating and told her that she was not allowed to throw up. Zuri nodded, but both of them knew what she was going to do the moment Khaos didn’t see her.
“Don’t throw up.” Khaos pinched her chin and pulled her face close to him. “I am serious, Zuri.”
Zuri nodded, yet when Khaos was not around, because he couldn’t stay with her all the time, she found herself bent her body and threw up the food that she ate, until she felt her throat was burning and her stomach was aching.
Tears rolled down her eyes and that was when Rhett entered the bathroom and found her in that situation. He widened his eyes, but didn’t say anything when he helped her to stand up and clean herself.
He gave her a glass of water and sat her down on the sofa. He didn’t seem really surprised, as if he had expected this.
“Do you want to talk about it?”
Zuri shook her head. She didn’t want to talk about how weird she was, instead she leaned in for a hug. She hugged him tightly and cried silently, while Rhett consoled her.
“I am sorry, Zuri. I am sorry, but everything will be alright.” He patted her back and then kissed her forehead. “It’s okay.”
Zuri didn’t know why he apologized to her, but she was not in the right headspace to think about that further. She wanted someone to hold her.
Meanwhile, Khaos just received a report about the royal warriors that had entered the River Creek pack’s territory, under the command of Silas and the royal gamma, Luca. They would reach the gates within two days.
Tension was in the air, all the pack members were anxious. With the winter came and there was this inevitable battle, they were worried about what would happen next.
Therefore, a day before the arrival of the royal warriors, many people gathered in front of the pack house, they asked for alpha Khaos to meet with them. What drove them to do this was the news about the ships that supposed to deliver their supplies for winter.
The ships had never arrived, it meant, food would be scarce and with the upcoming battle, it would be people like them, who would take the brunt.
They voiced out their fear and concern carefully, since Khaos’s presence was very strong, it was already a great deal for them to be able to stand in his presence.
“Please, alpha Khaos. I have three little children, if the battle broke out and without food for the winter, no one will survive.”
“From what I heard, there are a hundred thousand royal warriors, who marched here and there will be another hundred thousand that will come, we will not stand a chance against the
king alpha, please.”
“Alpha, please, have mercy on us.”
“Silas, please talk to alpha Khaos… we can’t afford to have a battle with the king.”
“We are going to die without food supplies.”
All of them voiced out their grievances along those lines. They were afraid they would be labelled as traitor and be killed, also there was threat of famine loomed over their head.
Zuri was standing next to Khaos, while Rhett was standing slightly in front of them to listen to their complains and tried to calm them down.
“The treasury of the pack has depleted,” Zuri informed Khaos in low voice. Her father had used a big chunk of it to fund the coup and it would take time to replenish it. “We can buy food from black market, but it will not enough to last until winter is over.” She had calculated it. “What are you going to do?”
Zuri was worried that this matter would put Khaos in bad light in their eyes. She didn’t want that for Khaos. She knew his goal and it wouldn’t do him any good to have people turned their back on him and painted him as a bad alpha.
“I can try to pull some businesses and gained some food supplies, but the problem is, the ocean is frozen now and there are no ships to deliver food supplies.” Zuri bit her lip, trying to think of the solution to help Khaos to solve this problem.
Meanwhile, the alpha simply looked at her, he found it endearing to have someone to think of a solution on his behalf and from the deep frown on her forehead, you could tell how hard she was trying to help him.
Khaos kissed her cheek instead and this put all the people, who was complaining, in confusion. They were complaining here, but the alpha just kissed deceased alpha Xaden’s mate.
Zuri was surprised, but she liked it. She didn’t know why she was being kissed all of sudden, but she liked it and turned her head so Khaos could kiss her other cheek and to everyone bewilderment, the alpha did it.
“Come here,” Khaos said, he then left the scene and took her to the other gates of the pack, it located at the south of the pack, where they used this gate to bring in goods.
Rhett was confused, so was everyone when the alpha left in the midst of their complain.
“I appreciate your effort to help to solve the problem,” Khaos said. He grabbed her hand carefully, because of how skinny her fingers were.
Famine was not here yet, but Zuri looked like she had suffered from it already.
“But, there is nothing to be worried about,” Khaos said, nodded at carriages after carriages that were being wheeled into the pack house. It would be enough until the winter was over.
Zuri was shocked, but then she remembered about the ships that Khaos had bought months ago. “The ships…” She talked in small voice. “You bought the ships for this? What about the king ships? Did you have anything to do with that?”
“That’s a harsh accusation, luna Zuri.” Khaos winked at her playfully and Zuri knew he indeed had something to do with the failed delivery for the food supplies that the king had arranged and she started to giggle.
“You are so wicked!” she said with a happy smile, as the pale sunlight fell on her face. “I like it,” she added.
But then, an idea came up in her mind and she pulled him down to whisper it to his ear. Khaos bent down his body to accommodate their height different. Even though, Zuri didn’t need to whisper to him, because all of the people around them were busy to move the carriages and Khaos could remind her that, they still did it this way.
Her warm breath caressed his ear and her voice sounded very excited to tell him what plan that she came up with.
Zuri was tiptoeing and Khaos had his arm around her waist to steady her, with her current body, it wouldn’t be too exaggerated to say that a strong gush of wind could make her stumbled.
“How’s it?” Zuri asked, her face flushed red, she was excited to hear his opinion. She loved talking to him about ideas because he took it seriously and she felt like she was his equal, instead of his subordinate or something.
Not like with her father, he would make sure Zuri knew that whatever she was doing, she would always be below him, because she was a woman and Roland was her father, on top of him being the alpha, thus he would always have the last say.
“Brilliant,” Khaos said, he pecked her lips and tucked strand of hair behind her ear.
Hearing that, Zuri’s heart swelled with happiness and pride for herself. It felt so different when someone acknowledged and praised you for your effort.
And while they had their own conversation related to the ships and food supplies, Caiden stared at them from the distance, as he counted all the carriages and checked the quality of food.
The gamma had seen the alpha was being playful, but it had never been genuine, until now. He looked relax and patient enough to hear whatever thing that Zuri told him.
Caiden was still unsure whether this was a good sign or not. He had received news from his father that he and Bryden would return in a month, thing would escalate from there once they learned the situation here.
But right now, they had another situation that they needed to handle first.
People were confused when they saw carriages after carriages that wheeled into the pack house and they started to sniff it.
