Many knew that Alpha Hubert of Shadow Pack and Alpha Richard of Eclipse Pack had been close friends for over a century. But over a decade ago, for reasons unknown, Hubert had suddenly retired and led Shadow Pack into the remote, frozen land of Frostmoore.
After more than ten years in hiding, Shadow Pack had faded from the recognition of many werewolf families on the continent. Still, Felix’s extravagant gifts were enough to make anyone take notice, and I couldn’t help but feel a pang of regret.
My grandfather had wasted all this wealth by giving such luxurious gifts to the blind fools of the Eclipse Pack.
After exchanging pleasantries with Caden, Felix left quickly, never even sparing me a glance. His cold attitude didn’t go unnoticed by the guests or the Holbrooks.
I was satisfied.
Felix’s gesture had firmly cemented my position as a lowly Omega who wasn’t valued by Shadow Pack.
Eleanor, ever the opportunist, would surely recognize the significance of her grandfather’s lavish gifts. Once she realizes I’m the Alpha of Shadow Pack, she’ll know I won’t be going anywhere. As for Caden, if he ever finds out how much wealth I actually have, who knows what he’ll do? He might not want to break the engagement after all.
“That Alpha of Shadow Pack sure is generous. I heard that his granddaughter is his first heir. I wonder what kind of elegant young lady she must be,” one of the gossiping women remarked.
Wendy looked at me, then at Felix’s retreating figure, before curling her lips in a mocking sneer. “I’ve heard that the heiress of the Shadow Pack isn’t just graceful, but also quite formidable, wouldn’t you agree? Ms. Sinclair, since you’re also from Eclipse Pack, have you ever met the heiress?”
I shook my head, and the other women snickered, covering their mouths in laughter.
The heir of Shadow Pack was practically a legend to outsiders. Very few knew her name, and even fewer had seen her in person.
“Oh, by the way, Wendy, didn’t you meet Alpha Hubert’s granddaughter at the Phoshire Fashion Show?”
Wendy glanced at me, then nodded. “Yes, I did. She’s incredibly beautiful and noble. We even exchanged Twitter handles and had a lovely chat. She told me that she’ll visit me when she comes to Rivemon! I’ll introduce you to her when she does.”
“Wow, Wendy, you’re amazing!”
Wendy was such a liar!
I never met her, and we never exchanged Twitter handles.
I couldn’t hold back any longer. I raised an eyebrow and asked, “Are you sure you really met the heiress of the
Shadow Pack?”
Wendy flusteredly nodded. “Of course I did.”
“What? I guess you must be very envious of Wendy. So what if you have the same surname as the Shadow Pack heiress? You’re just a bumpkin compared to her,” one of the women continued to mock.
I smirked and walked away.
These fools, so desperate to deceive themselves, were almost too ridiculous to watch.
Wendy kept glancing at me, clearly worried I might expose her. I couldn’t be bothered to do that; watching her keep up the act was far more entertaining.
Freya told me that ever since I finished playing the piano, Caden hadn’t taken his eyes off me.
I wasn’t bothered by it. When I played, all eyes in the room were on me – one more pair of eyes didn’t matter.
Then Freya spoke again. “Caden is angry with you for ignoring him tonight.”
I took a sip of my sweet wine, glancing sideways at Caden. Sure enough, his expression was as cold as ice.
I couldn’t help but feel a surge of ridicule. This man was so petty.
He must have expected me to fail like Wendy, just waiting to see me mess up. But I’d outperformed her – he probably never saw that coming.
I had no interest in dealing with a self-centered man like him.
I decided to treat these three months as a personal challenge, a chance to develop some inner peace. It would be over before I knew it.
I sat alone for a while, then I decided to leave early.
Just as I was about to head out and grab a cab, I suddenly heard Caden’s voice behind me.
“Who gave you permission to leave without saying anything?”
Caden’s POV:
I was truly surprised.
Not because of the gifts. The werewolf society was built on strict hierarchies, and Felix’s cold demeanor had already made it clear that this Omega from Frostmoore was a nobody in the Shadow Pack.
But I was completely captivated when Rosaline sat down to play the piano.
Her elegance while playing seemed like something she was born with, not at all like the lowly Omega I would expect from such a harsh northern land like Frostmoore.
I was confused. Her usual demeanor was nothing like what she showed tonight.
The celebration tonight was hosted by the Eclipse Pack. I was pleased that Rosaline, my supposed fiancée, had stood out in front of everyone. However, after she finished playing, she completely ignored my gaze, as if she didn’t care at all.
As the heir to Eclipse Pack, the future Alpha, I couldn’t understand why she was treating me like this.
When I saw her heading out, I couldn’t stop myself from following her. I had to ask her why.
Rosaline’s POV:
“You’re being ridiculous. Who said I have to report to you before leaving? Caden, it’s after hours. You’re not my boss now. What I do in my private time is my own business.”
I waved my hand dismissively, and a car stopped right in front of me. The driver got out and opened the door for me.
It was then that I realized it was Caden’s car. I hesitated, unsure if I should get in.
However, Caden spoke coldly, “We’re going back together. It’s too late, and if something happens to you, the Eclipse Pack will be held responsible.”
I frowned. “If you’re worried about me suing you guys for money, there’s no need for it. Your money is nothing to me.”
I turned to leave, but Caden grabbed my wrist, his tone unyielding. “Get in the car!”
I couldn’t believe how rude this man had become all of a sudden.
He ignored my irritation and said, “Since I promised the Alpha to stay with you for three months, I’m responsible for your safety during this time.”
Fine. He just didn’t want to be held accountable if anything happened. That was the only reason he was forcing me to go back with him.
I yanked my arm away and climbed into the car first, already feeling thoroughly frustrated.
Before coming here, I thought there was no way I’d have any sort of connection with Caden during these three months. But now it seemed like this man wasn’t just ill-tempered and difficult, he was also blunt and had no sense of tact.
How could my grandfather, such a sharp and powerful werewolf, be so clueless when it comes to my marriage?
Wendy’s POV:
My heart burnt with jealousy and I stomped my foot in frustration as I watched Caden and Rosaline get into the same car.
That shameless woman!
If I were the one engaged to Caden, I’d be the one sitting in that car with him right now. Roseline can get lost!
Tonight, she won, but that doesn’t mean she’ll keep winning. We’re on the Eclipse Pack’s territory now. This wasn’t someplace where a Frostmoore Omega can do whatever she wants.
I pulled out my phone and dialed a number. “I remember you mentioned wanting to be friends last time. If we’re going to be friends, you should give me a proper gift to show your sincerity, don’t you think?”
On the other end of the line was Stella, the Eclipse Group’s head of secretariat. I’d seen her at a banquet once. She had always tried to enter my social circle, but other werewolves had made it clear she wasn’t welcome.
Now that I was calling her, she had no choice but to be nice to me.
Sure enough, when Stella heard my voice, she immediately responded, her tone sweet and eager. “Of course, Ms. Crawford! What can I do for you?”
“It’s simple. Rosaline works under you now, right? I’m sure you can make her suffer a little, can’t you? If you do a good job, I’ll get you anything you want – any new bags, whatever you like.”
Stella hesitated for a moment, then became excited. “As expected of the generous Ms. Crawford! Don’t worry, I’ll take care of it.”
I couldn’t help but laugh inwardly. She really was one of the lower-tier wolves. A single bag could buy her loyalty.
“You’re confident that you can handle this?”
“Of course. Rosaline’s just a secretary. Mr. Holbrook doesn’t even care about her, and no one else pays attention to her either. Making her suffer will be easy.”
Hearing that Caden didn’t care about Rosaline at work made me feel so much better.
“Alright, then. If you do this well, I’ll make sure you’re rewarded handsomely.”
Caden’s POV:
I sat in the car, with Rosaline beside me, but she deliberately left a large gap between us.
