“The work you did just now is related to warehouse organization. You need to take care of it too.”
I raised an eyebrow. “What’s that got to do with the work I just did?”
“Don’t ask questions! I just got notified that the data in the warehouse needs to match what you’ve entered. You can’t leave until that’s done.”
I paused for a moment, then agreed. It was just some physical labor, and if I shifted into wolf form, it wouldn’t be a problem. It had been a while since I’d let Freya out to stretch her legs. Plus, it wouldn’t hurt to understand how Eclipse Pack’s internal operations worked better.
Following Stella’s instructions, I made my way to the Eclipse Group’s warehouse.
By midnight, I was standing in front of the large warehouse doors, the cool air biting at my skin. I punched in the access code, and the heavy doors slowly creaked open.
I stepped inside and the steel doors closed behind me with a thud.
But just as I entered, my nose suddenly caught a scent that made my wolf instincts flare.
Deep inside me, Freya growled a warning.
It was wolfsbane!
Rosaline’s POV:
The moment the scent hit my nose, Freya surged forward, taking control of my body. I transformed into a wolf instantly.
In the corner of the warehouse were several crates I was supposed to organize, and the strong stench of wolfsbane was wafting from them.
“Danger,” Freya growled, her instincts on high alert.
Suddenly, the warehouse lights went out. Freya immediately took a few steps back, her eyes scanning the darkened space, her hackles raised. I could feel the tension in her body as we moved together, one soul in two forms.
Freya stepped carefully toward the door and brushed her tail against it.
The heavy door was locked.
“Can you open it?” I asked anxiously.
Freya swiped at the door with her claws, but the heavy metal just screeched under the force, leaving only deep scratches behind.
The door was locked from the outside, and there was no way to apply pressure from the inside. Even Freya, with her strength, couldn’t break through it.
“D*mn it, this door isn’t just for keeping people out. It’s meant to keep wolves in.”
“Then we’ll find another way out. There must be a window or a ventilation shaft. This warehouse can’t be completely sealed,” I said.
I hated wolfsbane. This poison was the wolf’s greatest enemy. It was the reason my parents died. They were injured by wolfsbane and then attacked by other werewolves.
That night was eerily similar to the situation I found myself in now. The surroundings were pitch black, and the air was thick with the nauseating scent of wolfsbane. The toxic plant could paralyze a werewolf, rendering our muscles weak and stripping away our strength.
Freya leaped with all her might, but halfway through the jump, she let out a pained whimper.
D*mn it, there were more wolfsbane traps positioned above us.
Unfortunately, Freya had been exposed to some of it, and I could feel her strength slowly draining as the poison began to seep into her, weakening her with every passing second.
I focused my Alpha energy, sending it to her, reinforcing her will.
She managed to gain strength though her movements were sluggish. She looked up at the dark ceiling with frustration in her eyes.
“We can’t get out,” she muttered. “Why is there wolfsbane in Eclipse Pack’s warehouse?”
“Such a thing can harm werewolves, but it can also be used as a weapon against other packs. Most werewolf families keep a stash of it, just in case. But tonight … tonight, I’ve been set up by Stella.”
Freya growled fiercely, “I’m going to rip that b*tch apart.”
I quickly took control again, urging Freya to revert to human form. The warehouse was heavily secured, and with her large wolf paws, she wouldn’t be able to use a phone to call for help.
I forced myself to stay conscious, pulling out my phone with trembling hands. My vision was already blurring from the poison’s effects. I barely managed to type out a message, the words fading in and out of focus.
Everything went black after I sent my final plea for help.
Caden’s POV:
“It’s already 11 o’clock, and Rosaline still isn’t back. Who knows where she’s off to now … “
I was feeling thirsty and went downstairs to grab a drink of water when I overheard Queenie’s voice.
“That’s what you get from a bumpkin. She doesn’t know any better. If she were raised properly, she wouldn’t be out this late. Who knows what she’s doing outside?”
I found her words odd, but after the way Rosaline treated me yesterday, that odd feeling quickly faded.
It didn’t really matter to me what she was doing anyway.
My mother looked up at me with a serious expression. “Caden, it’s one thing for Rosaline to behave like this on her own, but if word gets out, it could ruin your reputation. After all, people know she’s your fiancée. I think it’s better to call off the engagement now before it causes any more trouble.”
I nodded indifferently. “Grandpa said we could call it off after three months.”
“Three months?” she shrieked. “It’s only been a few days, and I’m already losing patience. You should talk to your grandfather again and get rid of her, fast. The longer she stays, the more trouble she’ll cause.”
“Why don’t you talk to him?” I said, glancing at her.
She immediately fell silent. My grandfather valued his relationship with Shadow Pack too much to risk it, and he took family matters seriously. If she went to him with this, she’d just end up getting scolded.
I drank my water and didn’t bother to respond further. Instead, I went upstairs to my study.
My phone was on the desk, blinking with a new message notification.
I opened it, and the words that appeared made my stomach twist.
“Help me.”
It was from an unknown number. I didn’t recognize the sender, and at first, I thought it might be a prank by some wolf in the pack. I put the phone down and went back to finishing my work.
But that number felt strangely familiar.
Caden’s POV:
It was already 2 AM, and I was still wide awake in bed.
Rosaline still hadn’t returned. She didn’t know anyone here, so it was unlikely for her to stay out this late.
I closed my eyes and tried to shake off my thoughts.
What does it matter where she went? Why should I care?
But then, I suddenly remembered that distressing message she had sent. A fleeting memory popped into my head, and I immediately grabbed my phone, scrolling through the text history between me and my grandfather.
When my grandfather had asked me to pick up Rosaline, he had sent her phone number over. At the time, I’d been too busy to go and never bothered to save it.
I compared the number from the message to the one in my contacts. And then it hit me like a punch to the gut.
That message was from Rosaline. Is she in danger?
I shot upright with panic bubbling in my chest. Without wasting another second, I called the number back, but the call went unanswered.
I tried again several times, but all I could hear was the dialing tone. An uneasy feeling crept up on me.
What if something has happened to Roseline?
I threw on some clothes and rushed out the door, driving straight to the company. She worked at Eclipse Group during the day, so I figured I could at least check there first. If she hadn’t been there, maybe someone would have seen her when she left.
It was completely dark when I arrived at the building.
“Alpha, it’s a problem with the building’s circuit. The repair crew will be here by morning. Don’t worry, it won’t affect the employees’ work,” the guard on duty said, explaining the situation.
I asked about Rosaline, but the guard looked confused. He hadn’t seen her.
“She didn’t come to work today?”
“She came in this morning,” the guard said, “but I haven’t seen her leave. I swear to the Moon Goddess, I didn’t miss it.”
Rosaline has become quite popular around here recently. Many people had noticed her, so someone would have seen her if she had left.
So, she was still inside the building?
But why would she send me a distress message?
The guard thought for a moment, then added, “Alpha, I heard a few people talking earlier. Ms. Dixon assigned her a lot of work, and I think she went to the warehouse. Maybe she fell asleep there?”
