“Did you say Hunter?” he asked as interest sparked in his blue eyes. “There’s only one Hunter that I know of.”
“It’s the very same one you’re thinking about.” Austin answered.
He nodded. “I see now why you need my help… But why should I help you?”
I looked at my brothers before returning my attention to him. “We’re willing to offer our assistance to you in whatever way that you please. You can decide if you want it now or later down in life.”
He looked to be deep in thought as he played with a remote in his hand. I saw the moment that his eyes lit up as though he’d already thought of something that we could help him with.
“Before my son returns,” he said. “There is something that I want to discuss with you.”
We waited to hear what he had to say. Whatever it was, he didn’t want Arthur to know about it.
“now, I don’t believe in mates for my children. They choose whoever they want to spend their lives with. My eldest son, Arthur, he already chose his woman.” He informed us. I wasn’t sure what this had to do with us but I let him finish. “However, she is barren. I want grandchildren to carry on our family’s legacy. As such, I’ll need someone to have his baby. Someone that isn’t tied down to a pack.”
“What does this have to do with us?”
“I want you men to find a young hybrid woman for me. One that could survive in harsh conditions and is extremely strong willed as well as a fighter. A woman that could pass on these qualities to my grandchild.” He informed us. “She should have vampire b***d in her veins as well as werewolf b***d.”
“You want us to kidnap this woman and bring her here?” I asked, appalled at his request.
“no,” he said. “The kidnapping will be quite easy for us to do. All we need you to do is find someone that fits the requirement. Remember, she mustn’t belong to a pack. It will be easier that way for us.”
Austin and I gave each other looks of discomfort; this wasn’t what we were expecting in the least. It was a lot worse.
“If we do this, you’ll help us?”
He nodded. “There is just one more thing that I want, something that I believe you men can give to me.”
My body stiffened at his words. What else could we possibly offer to him?
“So, you have a mate and I can tell that your brother there has one… But you,” he said as he focused on Lucas. “Did you find your mate as yet?”
Lucas had that playful look on his face like he always did as he threw a pen into the air and caught it. “nope, I’m free for now.”
The man laughed. “That’s good to hear, after all, I was looking for a groom for my daughter.”
All the air flew out the room at his words.
The b***d drained from my head and suddenly, everything was hard to stomach.
Give Lucas away to his daughter?
Oh hell no!
“You can’t be serious?” Austin and I asked at the same time. I took one look at the unusual grim expression on Lucas’s face and knew that I had to put a stop to this nonsense even before it started.
I should have expected something like this from the leader of The Blackners. I’d heard enough about Gideon Blackner to know how heartless he was when it came to mates. The stories of these men were endless and if I’d taken an interest to it in the past, maybe I would have been more prepared for a situation such as this one. There must be someone else willing to marry his daughter, anyone but Lucas!
I tried to remain calm but it was hard to do under these conditions. I needed to remind myself that we were still in their kingdom, where they would have the upper hand.
“He still has his mate to find, what if she comes along and he’s marrying your daughter?” I demanded as anger took the place of all my other emotions. If I allowed this to happen, then it would be no different than the problem that we were already facing right now. Two wrongs didn’t make a right.
Gideon shrugged his shoulders and arched a brow. “That really isn’t my problem, is it?” he asked. “You came to me for help and I’m offering the help to you but only on these conditions. If you ask me, I’m doing him a favor. I mean look at the mess having a mate has caused you and your brother.”
His words only confirmed how he felt about anyone having mates. no wonder he wanted Lucas for his daughter. He was trying his best to make sure that she ended up with someone that wasn’t her own mate. If that was the case, maybe he already knew something that none of us did.
Had the girl found her mate already? Something told me that he was desperate to find someone to tie her down with.
Austin looked my way and I knew that he was thinking the same thing that I was. I couldn’t ask my brother to make such a huge sacrifice for me.
Coming here was a mistake, his request was simply insane. I couldn’t let Lucas lose his mate in order for me to get mine.
“This is bull-,”
“I’ll do it.” Lucas said, cutting me of.
I turned to him with widened eyes. I couldn’t believe he’d just agreed to something like that without talking to us first. This wasn’t a game, this was a big sacrifice, something that even I wouldn’t be able to do.
Gideon tapped him on his back with a wide smile. “I knew that you were a smart one from the moment that I saw you.”
“no.” I cut in, my voice stern. “You will not sacrifice your life for mine.”
Lucas arched a brow. “We don’t know if I’ll ever find my mate. But you already have yours. Let me do this for you brother.”
Even though he tried to hide his pain from us, I could still see straight through the pretense. This was a difficult decision for him and he was doing it only because of me.
