I shivered, the cold seeping into my bones. I hadn’t even been given a blanket, and I’d been waiting for a long time.
I wouldn’t complain, though. The doctor had likely been called away with an actual medical emergency. Mine was just what would become a routine check.
After a while longer, the door finally opened, without even a knock. I straightened at once, and opened my mouth to greet the doctor, only to realize the wrong doctor walked in.
This was not the man I had become familiar with, who shared in Grayson’s secret. This was someone else.
He was young-mid-thirties, maybe – with a thin face and glasses that sat crooked on his nose. He carried a medical bag and a clipboard, and he smiled at me with too many teeth.
I shivered again, but this time not from the cold. Something felt very… off about this man. But I pushed away those thoughts. This place was making me paranoid.
I had made an assumption, guessing the head doctor would attend me. For a routine check-up, any healer would
“Good morning, Luna Princess. I’m filling in for Dr. Harlan today.” He set the bag on the counter and began pulling out supplies. “We’ll do a standard check, and then I’ll administer an injection. Hormone support. Helps with conception.”
I watched his hands. He unpacked a syringe, a small glass vial, cotton swabs, and a rubber tourniquet. His fingers fumbled the vial cap. He had to try twice to draw the liquid into the syringe, and when he tapped the barrel to clear the air bubbles, his hand trembled.
Dr. Harlan drew blood with his eyes closed. This man handled a needle like he’d learned from a textbook yesterday.
The uneasy feeling swelled within me.
“Hold out your arm, please.”
I hesitated a moment. He looked into my face, but only for a moment.
“This is a routine procedure, Luna Princess. Nothing to be frightened over.”
Swallowing hard, I held out my left arm. He tied the tourniquet above my elbow and swabbed the inside of my forearm. The needle hovered over the vein.
“Nothing to worry about,” he said lightly, the corner of his lip curling up into a satisfied smirk.
Like he had just won something.
Before I even realized what I was doing, I grabbed his wrist, twisted the syringe out of his hand, and drove the needle into his thigh.
He screamed.
The clipboard hit the floor. He stumbled backward, yanking the needle from his leg, his face twisting from shock to fury.

“You – you crazy-” He lunged for me. kicked the medical bag into his path and bolted for the door. The hallway was empty. I ran. Heart racing. Adrenaline surging.
Behind me, his voice echoed off the corridor walls. “Stop her! She’s a patient – she refused treatment – she attacked me someone stop her!”
Two orderlies appeared at the far end of the hall. I ducked left through a supply closet and out a service door into a back stairwell. My bare feet slapped the stone steps. The paper gown flapped around my thighs.
I pressed myself flat against the wall of the stairwell landing and held my breath.
Footsteps pounded past above me. Voices barking orders.
Then quieter. A voice around the corner, low and tight, talking into a phone.
“She figured it out. Stabbed me with the damn syringe before I could administer it.” A pause. The fake doctor’s voice was strained. “No, I couldn’t finish. She’s fast-faster than any Gamma should be.” Another pause. “I know the plan is compromised. I’ll handle it. Just give me time.”
The footsteps retreated. I stayed pressed against the wall until my heartbeat stopped drowning out everything else.
Whoever had sent that man wanted something injected into my body, and it wasn’t hormone support. And whoever was on the other end of that phone call was giving orders.
The traitor. The one Grayson was hunting. They knew about me now.
I had to tell Grayson.
A moment longer, I waited, but when I heard only silence, I dared to move again. Staying in one place too long was just as likely to get me found than moving now.
I found clothes in the servants’ laundry – a spare tunic and trousers, no shoes – and made it back to Grayson’s wing without being seen.
He was sitting up when I came through the door, his wolf’s pale shape alert and bristling beside him. The Prime Beta stood at the foot of the bed.
All eyes turned to me as I burst into the room. Grayson’s cool gaze looked me over, pausing briefly to take in the sight of my bare feet on the tiles. I must have appeared unusual, especially as I glanced down and realized, in my haste, I had put my shirt on inside out.
But, then, nothing about what just happened was normal.
“I was… he was…” I was out of breath from my running.
“Sit down,” Grayson said. “Talk.”
I sat. My hands were still shaking. I pressed them flat against my knees.
For a moment, I focused on my breath, trying to get it back to normal. Grayson watched, waiting. His wolf moved closer to my side.
Finally, I felt calm enough to explain.
“Dr. Harlan wasn’t there. They sent someone else – young, thin face, glasses. Said he was filling in.” I swallowed. He wanted to give me an injection. Hormone support, he said. But his hands were wrong. He fumbled the vial. He couldn’t even draw the syringe without shaking.”
Grayson’s eyes didn’t move from my face. “And?”
“I grabbed the needle and stabbed him with it. He chased ine through the medical wing.” I paused. “I hid in a stairwell. He was on the phone with someone. He said – he said, ‘She figured it out. The plan is compromised.””
The Prime Beta shifted his weight. “Could you identify him?”
“Glasses. Surgical mask. Average height.” I shook my head. “I couldn’t pick him out of a lineup.”
The Prime Beta looked at Grayson. Something passed between them – a conversation I wasn’t part of.
“They’ve moved to targeting her directly,” the Prime Beta said. “The ambush investigation spooked them. Now they’re trying a different angle.
Grayson was quiet for a moment. Then he turned to the Prime Beta.
“Tell Dr. Harlan to make an announcement. The Prince’s wolf has been showing increased responsiveness to the Luna Princess. Use the word promising.” He paused. “If the people behind this believe she’s important to my recovery, they’ll hesitate before trying again. Buy us time.”
The Prime Beta nodded and left.
I sat on the edge of the bed. The adrenaline was draining out of me, and underneath it was pain – dull, spreading. The sprint from the medical wing and the training bruises from Ophelia’s drills had done their work. My right hip throbbed where the tall girl had landed a hit. My left side ached where I’d twisted away from the fake doctor’s lunge.
“You’re hurt,” Grayson said.
“I’m fine.”
