Chapter 22 – The War God Alphas Arranged Bride

“What is it?”

“Tell me what’s wrong,” he insisted.

“Oh, um…” I took my bottom lip between my teeth, feeling sheepish. “Well, it’s just that…I’m not really all that comfortable with attending events like this,” I admitted quietly.

A soft hum came from the back of his throat.

“Your worry is understandable,” Oliver noted softly. “These sorts of gatherings tend to be a

bit overwhelming. Especially, if one doesn’t feel confident in the area of conversing with those of a higher status.”

It was strange to think this was the same guy that held me at gunpoint, not once but twice for that matter. And here he was now, trying to calm me down.

I pushed out a deep breath and shook my head. “It’s not that I’m incapable of conversing with others. It’s always the subject of the conversation that tends to be an issue,” I argued. “You see, most Lunas and Alpha daughters are well-versed in things like clothes and properties. The concepts of material objects and fortunes seem to be only things that are worth talking about.”

“What is it that you wish to talk about then?” Alexander asked patiently.

“Things that actually matter when it comes to being a Luna. Agriculture. Trade. Ways in which to properly utilize resources. I want to talk about finding solutions to common problems that every pack faces but instead, I’m usually treated like some kind of weirdo because I’m not openly gushing over the news makeup trend.”

Alexander gave me an appraising look. His beta merely glanced between us.

“Well, sir. Would you be willing to attend the – “

“Yes,” he answered firmly.

My brows raised in shock. Really? Like many high-ranking and busy Alphas, Alexander never attended social events like these. It was typical for such matters to be left to the Lunas.

“Since it’s your first appearance as an official Luna, I’m willing to make an exception. Plus, I will take the opportunity to introduce you to the Alpha King.”

Regardless of his explanation, I was happy to take it. Meanwhile, Oliver’s look of suspicion hadn’t gone unnoticed. But he was too quick on his feet for anyone to take a moment to question him.

I did my best to ease some of my anxiety. At least this time around, I would have Alexander there for moral support and very possibly as a buffer.

[Third-Person POV]

Upon Fiona’s arrival back home, she entered the pack with feelings of pure rage and loathing. Not a single staff member was willing or wanting to confront her. She was utterly seething.

“I will find a way to make Alexander see sense when it comes to that bitch!” she vowed to herself. She rudely bypassed everyone while stomping her way back to her private rooms.

Caroline, who kept her pace behind her, spoke with the same calm authority as she had earlier.

“Why not attend the upcoming gathering?” she suggested with a devious smirk.

Fiona sneered at the thought.

“You heard what Alexander said,” she hissed.

Caroline merely shrugged while gazing down at her nails. “So? He said that you weren’t permitted to be around his pack. I don’t recall him saying anything about not attending special events.”

Some of Fiona’s anger lessened as her expression grew contemplative.

“I don’t know…”

The older woman stepped forward with a determined, vicious look in her eyes.

“Alexander never attended these gatherings, so it would be the perfect opportunity for Evelyn to be reminded of her true place,” she explained. “And, perhaps, a decent opportunity for me to learn a little bit more about her from her Stepmother and Stepsister. If anyone should have dirt on Evelyn, it would be those two.”

A malicious grin curved her lips. Fiona nodded her head in agreement.

Oh, yes. I will make Evelyn regret the day she decided to marry Alexander.

[Evelyn’s POV]

It wasn’t until I left Alexander’s side that I was finally able to breathe naturally. I hadn’t realized how much anxiety I’d been holding in since this morning until my chest opened up and my hands finally stopped shaking.

Although it was pleasing that I was now recognized as the pack’s Luna, I still found myself somewhat nervous around Alexander. Any possible wrong move would result in my immediate death, it seemed. So much has happened since this morning, and I was eager to tell Nina and Wendy everything. I calmly passed through the halls, doing my best to keep my calm. Nina was quick to answer the door when I knocked.

As I entered Wendy’s room, I was glad to see her resting in her usual spot near the large window in the back of the house. She lifted her head up from the book she’d been reading and graced me with a smile.

“Hello, dear,” she hummed. “From what

Nina’s told me, it sounds as though you may have had a busy day. You went to the camps, correct?”

I gave a tentative nod. “Yes.”

Both Nina and Wendy noticed the demeanor grow tense. Nina stepped forward with a freshly poured cup of tea in her hands. “Did something happen, Evelyn?” she asked.

I happily accepted the offered cup and took a few tentative sips. “Well, for starters, Alexander did not ask for me to come out to the camps.”

Nina raised her brows in question. “What do you mean?”

“I mean that Fiona tried to set me up as a means of hoping to get me kicked out of the pack,” I muttered darkly.

I had purposely kept out the part of nearly losing my life as a means to keep the peace in the room. Meanwhile, the two women were well engrossed in my explanation of what happened at the camps. I’d told them about Fiona setting me up, her throwing the ornate box, and then of her being temporally

expelled from the pack as punishment.

Nina’s jaw was practically on the floor, whereas Wendy pursed her lips in a disdainful smile.

“Well, it serves her right for trying to pull off such a dirty scheme,” she said tightly. “Fiona may be a decent doctor, but she’s still someone who prides herself over material things and social status.”

“How did you manage to convince Alexander you weren’t trying to spy on him?” Nina asked eagerly.

The corner of my mouth curved into a soft smile. “As it would happen, Alexander and I both possess similar-looking necklaces that once belonged to our mothers. Fiona tried to lie, making it seem like I had no respect or conscience toward Alexander’s possessions when I, myself, held something nearly identical to my heart, as well.”

Wendy raised both her hands up and gave me a soft clap in appraisal. “Good for you. I’m glad you were able to properly stick up for yourself. People like Fiona are the type that thrive off of sour energy and other’s

weaknesses.”

I felt my cheeks flush under the woman’s praise. It wasn’t something I was generally used to and it made me feel exceptional.

“After Alexander had sent Fiona away, he wanted to know if I’d be interested in wanting to meet the soldiers.”

This time, both Nina and Grandma Wendy were speechless. Wendy sat back in her chair with a marveled expression spreading clear across her face.

“Oh, my dear…That’s wonderful!”

“You must have left a strong impression on Alexander,” Nina said with a smile.
