I wanted to share in their positive feeling; however, deep down, I wasn’t sure what I was feeling. I didn’t know what to make of Alexander’s behavior lately.
This was the same man who went on to disregard my existence for the last week, only to make the grand announcement that he would be attending the upcoming Luna gathering with me. When I had gone on to tell
Wendy and Nina about that part of my harrowing day, they two froze in their places.
“That’s…Unexpected,” the older woman remarked.
“Alexander actually said that he would attend the gathering?” Nina asked, purely gobsmacked.
I slowly nodded my head in confirmation. I had no doubt that the man was exceedingly busy most of the time and never had any particular interest in attending such events – not to mention that his current physical state surely played a factor in this, as well.
I could sort of understand why something as mundane as this was rather surprising. Then again, maybe there was more at play than I knew of.
Nina looked shocked while Wendy appeared more contemplative than anything. She tapped the pad of her finger against her chin and narrowed her eyes in thought. “Interesting…Quite interesting,” she said to herself.
It reminded me of the look Oliver had given
to Alexander before stepping away. It was a knowing look, one that suggested there was more going on than I was aware of.
[Third-Person’s POV]
Oliver knew well to hold his tongue until he and Alexander were back within the safe confines of the private office before speaking. He waited until Alexander got out of his wheelchair and headed straight for the liquor cabinet.
Indeed, it’s been one of those days.
Watching Alexander take several long sips of the dark-colored liquor in his glass, he cleared his throat and began.
“Sir? Are you seriously planning on attending the upcoming Luna gathering?” he asked, daringly.
“Yes,” he responded gruffly. “It’s vital that Evelyn makes a good, strong first impression with the Alpha King. He needs to feel as though he’s subdued me into marriage so that he may kindly leave me alone.”
The Beta nodded his head and took a few
steps closer.
“And would those happen to be the only motives you have regarding the event?” he pressed lightly.
Alexander lifted his eyes up from the rim of his glass and flickered his gaze over to Oliver. His one brow curved upward in silent question.
He tried to appear indifferent by shrugging his shoulders back. “I don’t see why I would possibly have any other motive than that,” he commented dryly.
Oliver was not convinced. Having been around the man for years, he was capable of seeing right through him even during the most strenuous of times.
He tried to keep his tone as leveled as possible. “It wouldn’t have anything to do with Rena being there? Would it?”
Alexander’s eyes drifted off to one of the far corners of the office. His previous relationship with Rena was one that still haunted him to the present day. And one that he was never keen on opening up about.
“No,” he stated. “This appearance is purely to ensure Evelyn’s first impression as a new Luna will go perfectly.”
Oliver was wise enough to know that remark meant that the conversation was to be immediately dropped after that. Which he did. Unfortunately, that left Alexander with his darker thoughts revolving around his past with Rena.
He would have been lying to himself if he said that this gathering was purely for Evelyn’s benefit. He knew of the likelihood that he would see Rena. What he truly hoped for was a chance for her to see him with his new Luna.
Yes. I’d be lying if I said that I didn’t want to make her feel an ounce of regret and maybe even jealousy.
[Evelyn’s POV]
“Oh my God…How the hell am I going to do this?” I whispered to myself.
As the date of the Luna Gathering dawned closer, my anxiety decided to return with worrisome vengeance. I tried to keep reminding myself that I wasn’t, necessarily, going to be alone this time. Alexander for one reason or another agreed to accompany me to the event.
Truthfully, I shouldn’t have been nervous at all. It wasn’t as though I’d never gone to one of these events before. Unfortunately, I’d been dragged to many gatherings such as this one in the past. Each one felt like a mere mimic of the one before it.
One of the main reasons why I was dubbed as the ‘wild child’ was mainly because of my lack of interest in general social topics. I had very little care in high fashion and the newest makeup and hair trends.
It made it difficult to relate to people and for them to want to connect with me.
This whole situation was nothing new to me…Yet, for some reason, things were different this time around. Perhaps, it was because I wasn’t attending as just another Alpha’s daughter. I was a Luna now. That title placed me into a whole other category that I wasn’t entirely used to yet. My attendance was completely mandatory.
Sure, I shared in the responsibilities with Grandma Wendy when I could, but when it came to my duties as a wife, my relationship with Alexander was all but nonexistent.
Just one more factor to make me unrelatable to those around me.
I was sort of hoping that since Alexander had introduced me to the soldiers it would have done something to help aid our relationship. But no.
There was hardly any passing communication between us. And, as far as any intact went…Let’s just say that the beds in the master bedroom were still kept apart.
I kept recalling Nina’s words about how I managed to leave a strong impression on
Alexander, but had I?
It certainly didn’t feel like I had.
He was still keeping me at a distance without so much as a word. It was almost impossible to not take something like that personally. Especially, because I genuinely believed that he and I had reached some kind of mutual connection when we spoke out about our mothers.
Knock. Knock. Knock.
The sudden knock on the door pulled me from my thoughts. I turned to glance over my shoulder to find Nina peeking into the room.
“What is it, Nina?”
“Alexander is looking to meet with you down in the drawing room,” she said with a glimmer in her eye.
My stomach flipped. “Did he give a reason as to why?”
Nina merely smiled and gestured for me to follow her out. Amidst the dozen possibilities as to why Alexander would wish to meet me,
nothing prepared me for when I reached the drawing room and glanced inside.
What the actual hell was going on?
From wall to wall, the room was practically covered in different materials and dozens of boxes filled with new shoes and a chest filled with jewelry. Oh, boy.
Something in the back of my mind was telling me that this was all because of the upcoming gathering. Out of the corner of my eye, I spotted Alexander chatting with Claire across the room. As usual, he wore a serious expression on his face that dared not to be challenged.
I couldn’t tell what the conversation revolved around but I had a deep feeling that it may have been about me.
I intentionally cleared my throat as a means to announce my presence. “Um, what is all this – “
